Gregg Kaplan currently is President and Chief Operating Officer of Coinstar Inc. In this role, Mr. Kaplan oversees the four major lines of business for Coinstar including redbox, coin, money transfer and e-payment services. In total, these businesses comprise over $1.2 billion in revenue. Mr. Kaplan also oversees sales, strategic planning, IT, and new business development for Coinstar. Mr. Kaplan joined Coinstar in April 2009.
Prior to Coinstar, Mr. Kaplan was Chief Executive Officer of Redbox Automated Retail LLC. Redbox rents new release DVDs to consumers from automated kiosks for the low price of $1 per day. Redbox’s investors included McDonald’s Corporation and Coinstar Inc. Mr. Kaplan ran Redbox for nearly 7 years, bringing Redbox from incubation with just a few DVD kiosks in one market to over 14,000 kiosks across 48 states and from $0 in revenue to over $700 million in annualized revenue run rate. Over the same time, Mr. Kaplan oversaw the Redbox team’s growth from 5 people to over 1,200 employees, with Mr. Kaplan building the entire management team. Prior to Redbox, Mr. Kaplan worked in the Strategy and Business Development group of McDonald’s Corporation, where he was brought in to help McDonald’s create and build new businesses.
Prior to McDonald’s, Mr. Kaplan was a Partner and early employee in the venture capital area of divine interVentures, a B2B internet incubator which raised over $450 million privately and then achieved an IPO, raising another $350 million.
Prior to divine, Mr. Kaplan was an early employee at another startup, Streamline, which raised nearly $100 million and also achieved an IPO. Streamline simplified the lives of busy suburban families by providing them with Internet-based ordering of a wide range of goods and services, such as groceries, dry cleaning, video rentals, prepared meals, film processing, UPS package pickup and shoe repair. Streamline delivered these goods and services to families’ homes on a weekly, scheduled unattended basis. While at Streamline, Mr. Kaplan was responsible for, among other things, initiating and building business development partnerships with major consumer packaged goods companies such as Nabisco, Pillsbury, Campbell Soup Company, Kimberly Clark, Ralston Purina, General Mills, McNeil Consumer Products, Sargento Foods and Motts.
Prior to Streamline, Mr. Kaplan was an investment banker at Furman Selz, an investment bank in NY and worked on a wide variety of M&A, IPOs and other financing deals for media & entertainment and healthcare companies.
Mr. Kaplan is active in the Chicago Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization, In 2009, Mr. Kaplan was a finalist for Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” and a finalist for Illinois Technology Association’s “CEO of the Year” award.
Mr. Kaplan earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. Mr. Kaplan lives in Chicago with his wife and 3 children.
