Jacksonville, Fla.-based independent ATM deployer Global Axcess Corp. (dba Nationwide Money Services) reported a profitable second quarter, after revenue and net losses during the first quarter.

Net income for Q2 was up 24 percent, from $450,290 (2 cents per share) in Q2 ’08 to $557,031 (3 cents per share) in 2Q ’09, despite a 7-percent dip in revenue from quarter to quarter. Revenue for Q2 ’09 came in at $5.4 million, compared with revenue of $5.8 million in Q2 ’08.
For the year, revenue is down 5 percent, from $11.4 million in ’08 to $10.8 million, while net income is up 16 percent for the year, from $562,445 (3 cents per share) to $653,793 (3 cents per share).

GAXC chief executive George McQuain says the company’s net improvements will allow GAXC to continue its focus on delving into new business opportunities, including the placement of DVD-rental kiosks:

Management continues to invest in our sales and marketing capabilities, with the goal of expanding our network. Simultaneously, we are focused on adding additional services to accelerate our growth. We continue to focus on leveraging our ability to deploy, manage, maintain and process transactions from a wider range of self-service kiosks, beyond the traditional ATM, and our first application of self-service kiosks will be DVD-rental kiosks.

In fact, in an effort to further accelerate this program, we have expanded our pilot program for DVD-rental kiosks from nine to 24 locations. In addition, we have delivered 20 proposals for ATM deployments, up from five in the year-ago quarter, and we expect to kick off an aggressive marketing program that will include direct mail, trade shows, a redesign of our ATM Web site, as well as a continuation of our aggressive calling efforts. All of this is based upon recently completed market research that compared our offerings to our competitors and very strongly highlighted our competitive advantages in the market.

GAXC attributes its decline in revenue to the loss of a high-transacting client. But GAXC made up for the loss with the addition of two new ATM placement deals and an expanded ATM deal with an existing client.

GAXC, in a news release, says it added 126 new ATMs during the quarter:

While these agreements did not materially benefit the second quarter, they are expected to contribute to the company’s financial results in the third quarter.

McQuain says restructuring and stronger investments in sales have benefited the company since Q1:

We believe these efforts, coupled with the key re-staffing we’ve made to the sales organization, will help us grow our revenues. This will allow us to increase our free cash flow and help us to deliver enhanced shareholder value.

The economic crunch is taking its toll on ATM manufacturers. Earlier this week, Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf announced significant income dips for the second quarter of the year, and now Duluth, Ga.-based NCR Corp. reports similar results.

At the close of Q2, which ended June 30, NCR’s revenue for the quarter was down 16 percent from the same period last year and down 6 percent for the year. But net income took an even greater hit, falling from $44 million, 26 cents per share, in Q2 2008 to $23 million, 14 cents per share, for Q2 2009. For the year, net income is down 91 percent, from $92 million, 53 cents per share, to 8 million, 5 cents per share.

Bill Nuti, NCR’s chairman and chief executive, says the company continues, despite its revenue and net income dips, to see positive results in certain areas:

"While NCR continues to operate in a challenging environment for the core end markets we serve, our solutions are generating results in the areas where our customers are investing. In the meantime, we are executing on our vision to lead the self-service revolution in customer transactions, as evidenced by our entry into the entertainment kiosk market, and we are winning business in other new industry verticals as well.

We have also taken steps to enhance our global competitive position through major investments in our infrastructure in both the U.S. and South America. These initiatives will strengthen our manufacturing and sourcing capabilities and further improve our innovation, productivity and ability to meet customer needs."

NCR says the downturn in the global economy and its impact on capital spending in the financial services, retail and hospitality industries is to blame for the year-over-year revenue decreases. The company’s revenues in the Americas was down 13 percent for the year because of decreased product sales, NCR says.

In Europe, the Middle East and Africa, revenue is down 25 percent for the year; and in Asia-Pacific, it’s down 2 percent. Overall, however, sales to the retail and hospitality regions increased in Southern Asia Pacific and Japan for the first six months of 2009 when compared with the first six months of 2008.

On a positive note, NCR says Q2 brought about a number of internal changes to strengthen the company’s global position through refined infrastructure and sourcing facilities across the entertainment, travel and healthcare industries.

NCR says it also plans to create a new global self-service headquarters and a separate clean-energy manufacturing facility in Columbus, Ga., for the next generation of the SelfServ ATM line. NCR plans to open a new manufacturing and research and development center in Brazil, where ATMs for Brazil, Latin America and the Caribbean markets will be manufactured.

NCR expects both facilities to be operational by year-end 2009. The company also expects that the facility in Brazil will expand over time to include self-service technologies for a variety of industries.

NCR says other highlights for the year, such as the company’s acquisition of TNR Holdings and a self-service deal with Delta Airlines, should not go unnoticed:

"NCR made further progress implementing its entertainment kiosk strategy during the second quarter. In April, NCR purchased TNR Holdings Corp., the second-largest DVD kiosk operator in North America, with the goal of expanding the NCR SelfServ Entertainment portfolio across the continent as part of its strategic partnership with Blockbuster Inc. In addition, another kiosk business in which NCR is invested, e-Play, has made strategic progress in its efforts to move beyond movies and leverage its self-service capabilities to enter the video game trade and resale market. Delta Airlines, a long-time kiosk customer, became the first airline to shift to NCR’s highly advanced TouchPort 70 check-in kiosk, which greatly accelerates the check-in process. NCR also saw the first deployment of its TouchPort airline kiosks in China, as China Southern Airlines deployed kiosks across several of its major hubs. The partnership strengthens NCR’s global airline check-in business and establishes a presence in the world’s second largest airline market and one where passengers exhibit a strong preference for interacting via self-service channels."

Conifer Health Solutions also began deploying NCR MediKiosks and the NCR Patient Portal across its hospitals and health systems.

Germany-based ATM manufacturer and IT solutions provider Wincor Nixdorf AG says the global economic crisis has had an adverse impact on its financial results for the first nine months of fiscal year 2008/2009. Wincor Nixdorf posted net sales of €1,729 million, down 1 percent from the previous year. The close of the third quarter revealed the greatest losses, the company says, with net sales falling 11 percent to €496 million. Net sales from business with banks increased slightly, 1 percent, in the first three quarters, but fell 10 percent in Q3. Net sales from retailers have fallen since the beginning of FY 2008/2009 by 4 percent, with net sales dropping 13 percent in Q3.

Germany remains Wincor Nixdorf's strongest market, with net sales for the first three quarters up 17 percent from the previous FY. Business in Germany accounted for 28 percent of total net sales. Net sales in Germany for Q3 totaled €149 million, up 3 percent from Q3 2007/2008.

Net sales throughout Europe fell 13 percent for the year, though Europe continues to contribute the largest share of net sales, 47 percent. Net sales in Europe for Q3 fell 21 percent.

Net sales in Asia-Pacific and are up 13 percent for the year, but down 5 percent for Q3. Business in the Americas increased slightly, 1 percent, for the year and were up 5 percent in Q3.

The results are not surprising, says Wincor president and chief executive Eckhard Heidloff:

"Slower growth at the end of the good first half had already made it clear that we would feel the effects of the global economic crisis. We will have to get used to a shrinking hardware market for the duration of 2009."

Delayed hardware investments from banks and retailers have contributed to the losses, Heidloff says. Thus, the company expects to continue focusing more heavily on its software and services businesses.

Net sales from hardware dropped 7 percent year-over-year, while software and services net sales jumped 10 percent. Hardware, however, still accounts for the majority (55 percent) of Wincor Nixdorf’s overall net sales.

Corporate realignment expected to help

Since September, Wincor Nixdorf’s workforce has dropped by 69 employees. The company has launched the ProFuture program to prepare and position the company for the current and post-crisis market. The program aims to reduce the company’s cost levels by enhancing internal operational efficiencies.

LONG BEACH, Miss. — Off-premise ATM leader Triton has announced a new Remote Key Transport, or RKT, solution, which allows distributors to save money by loading keys remotely. Triton, the first ATM manufacturer to bring this cost-savings solution and security feature to the off-premise space, began deploying RKT in the United Kingdom in March. Triton’s RKT solution will be available in Canada and the United States this summer and in Australia and South Africa before the end of the year.

“Until recently, ATM deployers were required to have two technicians enter the keys into a keypad and send it out to the ATM site, or have two people visit the site so that each one entered only one half of the master key,” said Bob Douglas, Triton’s director of engineering. “Now, rather than having to pay two people to manually enter keys, Triton’s Remote Key Transport solution uses cryptography to allow distributors to remotely load keys directly from the host to the ATM across a public network.”

“This allows ATM owners, especially those with large ATM fleets or those that operate in markets like the United Kingdom, which mandates the use of RKT and requires that master keys be changed every year, to save a considerable amount of money while improving security and improving uptime,” Douglas said.

Merchants and cardholders also benefit from Triton’s RKT solution. By eliminating the human element from the key-loading process, security is improved, and merchants are better able to serve their customers with improved ATM uptime, since keys can be changed at any time remotely.

DAYTON, Ohio — More than 200,000 of the nation's approximately 400,000 ATMs are owned and operated by U.S. financial institutions, and a growing number of those machines are increasingly relying on deposit automation technology. And NCR Corp. says it is playing a critical role in providing that new technology.

According to a news release, NCR has deployed more than 10,000 of its no-envelope, “intelligent deposit” ATMs throughout the United States.

In 2008, more than 70 percent of NCR’s U.S. SelfServ ATM shipments featured intelligent deposit. According to London-based Retail Banking Research Ltd., NCR’s automated deposit solution was the most widely deployed imaging solution in the United States. Based on sales trends and market estimates by RBR, NCR says it expects traditional envelope-based ATM deposits to be nearly extinct by 2019.

Intelligent deposit is touted for reducing fraud, increasing revenue, eliminating paper costs and reducing operational costs.

“The days of licking envelopes at the ATM are soon over,” said Michael O’Laughlin, vice president and general manager, NCR Financial Services Solutions. “As with all forms of self-service technology, intelligent deposit ATMs help financial institutions connect, interact and transact with their customers. By reaching the milestone of 10,000 intelligent deposit ATMs in deployment in the U.S., our financial institution customers have validated NCR’s end-to-end deposit automation solution. The growth of this technology shows how powerful this self-service technology can be to improve bank operations and reduce costs, while improving the overall customer experience.”

NCR built the first intelligent deposit ATM in 1998 and, according to RBR, has been the worldwide leader in ATMs for 22 consecutive years.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After a six-month research project that involved the surveying of some 1,600 ATM and financial executives from throughout the world, ATM Marketplace and the ATM Industry Association have announced plans to release the findings of their research next month.

In this five-year ATM and financial industry outlook, titled "ATM Future Trends 2009," ATM Marketplace, an industry Web site dedicated to news and information about the financial self-service market, and ATMIA have included in-depth analysis of the survey results as well as industry perspectives from nearly 20 revered industry executives. Those industry experts include Debbie Bianucci, the president and chief executive of Chicago-based Banking Administration Institute; Bill Nuti, the president and CEO of NCR Corp., the world's largest ATM manufacturer; Aravinda Korala, the founder and CEO of KAL, one of the world's largest third-party providers of multivendor ATM software; Eckard Heidloff, the president and CEO of Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf AG; and many more.

The 120-page report offers statistics and graphs that highlight growth and financial-services trends in developing and developed markets covering the next five years.

The report also includes a section dedicated to the use of cash today and into the future. Based on the findings of ATMIA CEO Mike Lee, this cash-specific survey offers a one-of-a-kind look at cash from a futurist's perspective. ATM Marketplace and ATMIA launched a white paper in the fall that highlights some of the overarching themes of the cash survey, but only the full Future Trends report contains the survey's full findings.

Tom Harper, the publisher of ATM Marketplace, said the report is one of the most in-depth ATM future-trends studies to hit the market.

As a bonus, ATM Marketplace has included with each purchase of the Future Trends report a copy of the Future Trends presentation it hosted during the annual ATMIA U.S. conference in February. The video presentation includes a panel discussion with executives from BAI, KAL and Wincor Nixdorf and is moderated by ATM Marketplace editor Tracy Kitten.

PADERBORN, Germany — Wincor Nixdorf AG has announced the release of an enhanced security product for bank branches called ProTect.

According to a news release, ProTect's three-tier concept begins with analysis of potential risks, continues with a solution portfolio for minimizing risks, and offers service components for complete monitoring of branches and systems.

In response to the growing number of attacks on ATMs, Wincor Nixdorf at last week's Wincor World 2009 event demonstrated new technologies that prevent manipulation of cards, presenting systems that withstand attempted attacks using explosives, and showing how ATMs and cash cassettes can be protected against theft.

Wincor Nixdorf is offering a new model that helps protect card information from being copied with skimmers and hinders spying-out (phishing) of PINs.

Other ATM, branch security highlights

The company is also showed how card fraud can be avoided through additional authorization at ATMs using biometric-identification methods.

Integrated ink staining system also is available for ATMs and systems from the ProCash 4000 series. Ink staining is triggered when the ATM's cassettes are removed without authorization, or when the ATM is shaken or its position changed. The ink spray renders the banknotes completely useless.

Also displayed was innovative safe technology designed to withstand attacks with explosive gas.
The first step in Wincor Nixdorf's three-tier security concept is a risk analysis, in which experts assess the potential threats to a bank. The bank's various business processes, information and communications infrastructures, and work environments are examined. The protection requirements of individual areas or departments are classified on the basis of this analysis, and solution concepts for protective measures are formulated under consideration of existing regulations and limitations.

The second step comprises the implementation of customized security measures, solutions and technologies, such as those described above. Additional solutions for protecting against different types of attack are also presented.

The third step involves offers for controlling and monitoring risks. An example is the linking of alarm and video systems to enable rapid detection of criminal attacks and thus protect systems and buildings.

PC/E Retail Banking Solution Suite with new services

Wincor Nixdorf supports banks in networking their delivery channels and enables new customer services by continuously developing its ProClassic/Enterprise Retail Banking Solution Suite. The availability of a new business service enables consumers to initiate transactions for themselves or third parties using a variety of channels, and to withdraw cash at ATMs. A further offer enables value-added services in the self-service zone and Internet.

PC/E Mobile Transaction Services, a new software product, combines cardless withdrawal of money at the ATM with person-to-person payments. The software ensures intelligent interaction between mobile terminal devices and the self-service system. Financial institutions can thus offer their customers a cross-channel P2P payment solution that enables cash withdrawals at the ATM for customers themselves or for third parties using mobile-terminal devices. The transaction can be initiated over a retail bank's various channels. The recipient of the payment does not require an EC card at the ATM, but instead authorizes the payment by entering two number codes.

"The solution allows banks to offer their customers innovative multichannel services that make a decisive contribution to enhancing their loyalty. When payments are made at the automated teller machine, often potential new customers can be addressed using one-to-one marketing solutions like our PC/E Direct Marketing," said Thomas Certa, who oversees solutions marketing for Wincor Nixdorf.

PC/E Value Added Services enable additional offers at self-service terminals, such as ticketing, topping prepaid mobile phone cards or booking travel. PC/E Value Added Services support FIs in sales generation at self-service terminals. Wincor Nixdorf's portfolio ranges here from implementation of the solution to operations management, including content editing and the handling of payment transactions.

The ProClassic/Enterprise Retail Banking Solution Suite

The ProClassic/Enterprise Retail Banking Solution Suite is Wincor Nixdorf's modular software suite that focuses on sales and service processes at a bank's front office. The combination of software products from the four main areas of channel delivery, security, management and optimization and banking business enabling means that retail banks can transform their current customized IT architectures into future-proof, expandable ones.

As a result of the suite's network-centric approach, new services and functions can be implemented quickly and the entire hardware and software landscape managed centrally and across all channels. The service-oriented multichannel concept of the software package also means that implemented functions and services can be reused across all delivery channels.

MEBANE, N.C. — ArcaTech Systems, a supplier of transaction automation solutions for the financial, retail and self-service industries, has a new retail cash automation solution that allows merchants to control cash in retail environments.

Funds are automatically deposited and withdrawn from the secure system. Cash deposits can be transported to the retailer's financial institution at a later time. Ideal for large retail operations, ArcaTech's solution allows users to reduce costs and shortages while improving cash control and cash availability.

"Our back room cash automation solution represents the next technological leap in the cash cycle," said Aubrey Meador, vice president of ArcaTech. "We've replaced a manual, antiquated process and, in the process, lowered the costs of doing business."

Jim Halpin, ArcaTech's retail solutions director, believes merchants will dramatically improve the way they conduct banking transactions. "The industry has spent more than 40 years automating the cash cycle, but we are moving now to a fundamentally better process," he said. "I haven't seen such a high level of interest in a technological product since ATMs were introduced."

ArcaTech's centralized cash room technology is comprised of an integrated system to handle cash, coins and other media. Limiting in-store cash touch points, the systems will help retailers avoid mistakes and discrepancies, eliminating human error and reducing risk of theft. The solution also improves fund availability and operational efficiency by speeding the time required to count, dispense or deposit funds.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a data communications and telecommunications technology manufacturer based in Minneapolis, and Symstream Americas Inc., a Texas-based wireless technology company, have announced the release of their SocketModem SS embedded cellular wireless modem, according to a news release.

Designed to reduce ATM fleet management cost on Symstream enabled GSM/3G networks, the SocketModem SS (Model MTSMC-G1-SS) cellular wireless modem incorporates Multi-Tech Systems' cellular wireless hardware and Symstream's internationally patented data transfer protocol that is fully supported by Symstream's management and gateway system.

According to the release, the SocketModem SS offers greater flexibility and connectivity for ATM terminals, kiosks and POS terminals as it provides connectivity throughout the carrier's larger GSM (voice) wireless network as distinct from their packet data network. Now shipping in the USA utilizing the AT&T GSM network, the SocketModem SS will be available in Asia and Europe in Q1 of this year.

An added benefit of the SocketModem SS is that it is plug compatible with the Multi-Tech dial-up SocketModem currently used in many of the leading ATMs in the U.S. marketplace, therefore allowing a simple, cost effective upgrade to this new powerful cost saving wireless modem. An external model is also planned supporting Ethernet, RS-232 and USB interfaces.

The SocketModem SS, when connected to the Symstream network, also provides access to the comprehensive Symstream Souran management system which supports remote operation and a high level of performance monitoring allowing network and fleet operators to potentially reduce their overall costs and provide greater uptime for their ATM fleet. Souran is a carrier grade management platform that offers flexible connectivity to ATM terminals, kiosks and point-of-sale terminals. Souran management offers GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA and optional HSUPA capabilities designed to operate on a variety of platforms from a central point.

"Multi-Tech and Symstream's synergies and cooperative relationship ensure that our customers will continue to receive a quality product in a timely manner," said Mark Gamon, Symstream's sales and marketing director. "Multi-Tech's excellent in-house hardware design team, global recognition for their product quality, and also international sales and support network combined with Symstream's world-leading wireless technology, will create an end-to-end solution and strengthen our entry to serve the worldwide financial market."

PADERBORN, Germany -- Indonesia's BCA has chosen Wincor Nixdorf to provide kiosk and ATM technologies as the financial institution moves to expand its multichannel self-service network.

As Indonesia's largest transactional bank, BCA has more than seven million customers.

According to a news release, BCA will deploy 283 ProCash1500xe ATMs and 200 ProInfo 1000 kiosk systems (in addition to the existing 1,090 Wincor Nixdorf kiosks installed since 2003.) In addition to installing the systems, Wincor Nixdorf will assume responsibility for maintenance of both the kiosks and ATMs through its extensive service coverage in the archipelago.

Financial institutions such as BCA are now beginning to migrate their deposit and withdrawal transactions to self-service zones in the branch and at offsite locations to improve service to individual and business consumers.

BCA took on a pioneering role to move teller transactions to ATMs migrating 70 percent of teller transactions to self-service outlets in 2007. And to enhance customer service further, BCA has now migrated up to 30 percent of non-cash transactions from the bank's ATMs to more than 1,000 existing ProInfo 1000 kiosk terminals reducing customer wait times at ATMs.

Examples of more complex transactions handled by this terminal include registration for e-banking and payment functions for 70 different types of bills, purchases of vouchers and airline tickets and funds transfers.

"We are very satisfied with the advanced technology from Wincor Nixdorf and our customers are satisfied with us because of the ease of use and the feeling as a part of the modern society," said Stephen Liestyo, senior general manager of BCA's Consumer Banking Division. "Furthermore, we are not only gaining a competitive advantage by using the kiosks, we are also saving money, since the transaction costs at the terminals are 30 percent lower compared with transaction costs at the ATM."

PADERBORN, Germany — Wincor Nixdorf AG is enhancing its consulting portfolio for the banking business.

According to a news release, Wincor Nixdorf plans to expand its business intelligence into its overall consulting business. Wincor Nixdorf says it is responding to the increased demand for specialized knowledge in the area of designing and integrating business-intelligence solutions.

"In a second step, we identify the various processes and user concerns, define the key figures and determine the recipients, contents and structure of the reports. These first two steps are followed by the development of the new process and system design. A test environment is developed on this basis and a prototype BI solution installed. System, applications and data quality are then examined in a test phase, after which the system is configured and is put into operation."

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Sagem Denmark, an Ingenico Group company and a provider of payment solutions has announced the launch of Remote Key Load (RKL), a fully automatic exchange of Triple DES master keys for use in maintaining a high level of security of ATMs.

According to a news release, the continuous effort of keeping ATMs secure is growing increasingly expensive and regulated. Ensuring that ATMs are locked down and protected has become more complicated since the advent of Triple DES and the requirement that ATMs use encrypting PIN pads.

Those additional requirements have added to the cost and complexity of key management by necessitating longer keys and more hands-on interaction. Manual, more traditional key loading requires two different employees or technicians to visit each individual ATM to enter only parts of the master key. In addition to increased personnel costs, this method doubles the potential for error.

RKL eliminates human-error concerns and improves key-loading efficiency.

"As long as a system meets some basic requirements, installing the first 3DES master key is a matter of connecting the ATM to the host via regular channels and running the Remote Key Load protocol," said Lars Clausen, vice president of Sagem Denmark. "The installation takes place in about 10 seconds — without the need for human involvement."

According to Sagem Denmark, these basic requirements include: the ATM and the host-ATM protocol. The ATM's EPP and the host's HSM must all support RKL. The host must have a host key pair and a suitable certificate on the public key, and the EPP must have two key pairs with corresponding certificates. Sagem Denmark will assist and support the customer with a correct and efficient implementation of the RKL solution.

Beyond cutting costs and simplifying key management, RKL incorporates several security features, such as mutual authentication, meaning the host and the EPP can verify each other in a single operation. Other advantages include protection from inadvertently reinstalling old key values, an encrypted transport of the master key and a cryptographically signed message after a successful key transfer.

NEW YORK - Parabit Systems has announced that, after months of work, it has installed its first welcome center at the John F. Kennedy Airport, according to a news release.

The welcome center is the first of 27 that will focus on creating an easy transition as travelers are provided with information on ground transportation services, hotels, attractions and airport services. ATMs will also be provided for travelers who need cash. The welcome centers will be positioned in highly visible areas, either in Customs or next to the baggage claim area.

The JFK welcome center is designed so that passengers can obtain information they need from an array of self-service technologies, including digital signage, kiosks, restricted dial telephons and ATMs, as well as many brochure displays, graphic displays and manned customer service counters. Additional self-service technology to further enhance the center is under evaluation.

"Within the first few weeks of operation at JetBlue T5, thousands of customers have been assisted as well as assisted themselves via the self-service elements of the center," said Rob Leiponis, president of Parabit. "The feedback we are getting from the comments on its design, the services and information it provides and its highly identifiable presence from a distance, supports that our design and technology concept has had a very positive impact on the passenger experience."

Once all 27 welcome centers have been completed, the port authorities in New York and New Jersey will have a standard impressionable design in all terminals for customers to remember for future travel through their four airports.

BEIJING — NCR Corp. announced that its NCR SelfServ 25 ATM has been named a winner in the computer and business products category of the 2008 China's Most Successful Designs award program, jointly sponsored by FORTUNE China magazine and China Bridge International, one of China's design management consulting firms.

The award is a premier international competition honoring outstanding designs in the Chinese market, and recognizes excellence in marketing and financial performance as well as strategic and social impact. This year, of the products launched in China, more than 133 entries were received from manufacturing and design companies from around the world.

The NCR SelfServ 25 was honored for its unique design and innovative product development, and was praised by the judges for successfully creating a "wow factor" in meeting and exceeding customers' needs. NCR's next generation of ATMs, the NCR SelfServ family, was launched in China and worldwide earlier this year. The NCR SelfServ 25 is an exterior through-the-wall and vestibule ATM with a small footprint and ideally suited for both in-branch and off-premise use.

"We are excited to receive this recognition of NCR's continuous commitment to innovation in our product development, which helps our customers transform their businesses and enrich consumers' experiences," said Patrick Chou, president of NCR North Asia. "Along with the other models in our new family of ATMs, NCR SelfServ 25 helps financial institutions meet the challenges of growth, operational efficiency and corporate responsibility, by delivering high quality, fulfilling consumer experiences and projecting a strong brand image, while reducing the costs and complexity of maintaining and managing their self-service channels."

The NCR SelfServ 25 embodies a new industrial design direction for NCR's self-service terminals for banking transactions. The design raises the standards for simplicity, ease of use, accessibility, security, serviceability and reduced environmental impact for self-service terminals.

The NCR SelfServ 25 was designed by NCR's in-house design team. All NCR product developments follow the NCR User Centre Design process, an iterative process of early and frequent involvement of users in evaluating simulations, prototypes and early production units in key markets.

The design principles illustrated by the NCR SelfServ 25 apply to the NCR SelfServ family of 10 different self-service terminals, each designed to meet specific market needs, functionality and placement. The entire family benefits from commonality of design, layout and even components, with approximately 70 percent of parts used throughout the range.

The rollout of the NCR SelfServ family is progressing successfully with over 8,000 units ordered by more than 230 customers around the globe year-to-date.

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — MagTek Inc., a global provider of electronic payment technology, today announced the MDX. It offers a compact check reader with a dual-sided scanner and a secure MagneSafe reader all in one sleek design.

Remote deposit allows companies to instantly and securely process checks without ever having to go to the branch, saving businesses time and money. It allows financial institutions to offer their services to companies even where they don't have branches, extending their customer base without incurring the cost of additional branches. This provides a savings they can pass on to their depositors and offer competitive services to anyone, almost anywhere.

"The MDX is the latest addition to MagTek's broad family of check readers and scanners that are currently being used by retailers and financial institutions around the world to read and image millions of checks daily," said Andy Deignan, vice president, financial business unit at MagTek. "In addition, our products offer end-to-end security needed by financial institutions to ensure safe remote deposit."

MDX has a built-in secure MSR that incorporates MagTek's MagneSafe security architecture, which mutually authenticates the MDX scanner to the financial institution's host application, ensuring the integrity and legitimacy at both points of the transaction. Furthermore, MDX offers comprehensive multi-factor authentication addressing the concerns raised by the FFIEC: "When used as the only control mechanism, single-factor authentication is considered to be inadequate for high-risk transactions involving access to customer information or the movement of funds to other parties."

GENEVA — Diebold Inc. has been awarded a two-year branch-transformation project by European retail banking group Dexia.

According to a news release, the deal includes 1,000 Opteva 328 EF/D recycling units and an accompanying services package. Equipped with Agilis Power software, the Opteva 328 EF/D recycling units have been customized to meet Dexia's requirements for cash recycling and dispenser functionality. The units will be placed in Dexia's branches in Belgium and will replace the bank's existing Diebold 9x series ATMs.

The consultation process for this new contract started when Dexia embarked on a project to examine the profitability and security of the branch. The new Diebold installation meets the challenge of collecting and recycling commonly used banknotes, while also allowing consumers to withdraw any kind of euros, including €5,100 and €500 banknotes. The machines can be configured for cash-in, cash-out, recycling or any combination of the three.

"Banks are increasingly looking for better automation for their ATMs, and Dexia is no exception," said Dave Wetzel, vice president and general manager of Diebold for Western Europe. "The new generation of Opteva models is leading the way in bank transformation and releasing staff for more value-added tasks."

Diebold's Opteva 328 EF/D is complies with European Central Bank Article 6 requirements and allows a user to make a bulk cash deposit of up to 200 notes without an envelope. The ATM also has a secure escrow area where the deposited notes remain until the customer accepts the transaction, allowing the user to cancel the transaction and have the notes returned, if necessary.

The ATM can easily validate note deposits, which can then be sorted by denomination, added to the existing recycler supply and re-dispensed according to demand. The deposit mechanism from the ATM is equipped with many sensors for fraud detection. The algorithms for counterfeit detection are updated on regular basis to optimize discrimination of new versions from counterfeit banknotes.

PADERBORN, Germany — Wincor Nixdorf AG says the 2007/2008 fiscal year was a financially record-setting year, despite the economic challenges affecting companies throughout the world.
According to a news release, Wincor Nixdorf on Sept. 30 closed the year with an 8 percent increase in net sales, hitting the corporate forecast for the year.

Wincor Nixdorf reported annual net sales of €2.3 billion (U.S. $3 billion), up from €2.1 billion (U.S. $2.8 billion) in 2007/2008. Profit for the period was up 17 percent year over year.

"This growth line still applies to us in the medium term, even if our business performance may become bleaker in the short term, due to the global impact of the financial market crisis," said Wincor Nixdorf chief executive Eckard Heidloff today during a press conference in Düsseldorf, Germany. "Retail banking has proven to be the business segment in the banking arena that reacts with the least volatility to market circumstance. That will tend to stimulate its renaissance further."

Wincor Nixdorf has expanded business activities with retail banks and retailers over the last 12 months. Global expansion continued systematically, reducing dependence on individual customers or singular economies. The company says it was able to enlarge its solutions portfolio by adding innovations that enable banks and retail companies to achieve cost advantages and additional customer service in their business processes.

Wincor Nixdorf also expanded its activities in the areas of consulting, software integration, managed services and outsourcing in the year under review. Expertise in branch/store and self-service business is now expected to be applied to adjacent sectors to achieve additional growth potential.

"As far as we can see now, we assume that we will be able to follow up the very good previous year's performance and maintain approximately the same level of business," Heidloff said.

Despite a forecast that tends to be positive, management at Wincor Nixdorf agrees that it is not possible to tell definitively whether and when the financial market crisis can be contained or what impact it will have on the world economy. That applies to both established countries and newly industrializing countries. Depending on the intensity of the negative effects, short-term reductions in retail banks' and retailers' capital spending budgets cannot be excluded. Wincor Nixdorf is preparing to respond flexibly to the challenges that may arise.

"Our main priority is to make our cost structures more flexible in order to secure our margins," said chief financial officer Dr. Jürgen Wunram. "We are therefore taking suitable steps in production, sales and service to make Wincor Nixdorf 'weatherproof.'"

On a typical day in March 2008, the group reports, nearly 9,800 financial institutions received more than 42 million check images for posting.

"The use of imaging technology is only going to grow, with the Federal Reserve stepping up the timing for closure of several check-processing facilities," said Hollen. "And as member demand grows for convenient access to their accounts, Co-Op is committed to providing credit unions with the tools to compete and succeed in the Check 21 world."

ROHS-compliant and PCI-approved, the PIN pad is an option for unattended-payment solutions, such as ticket-vending machines and parking venues.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Diebold Inc. says United Technologies Corp. has withdrawn its unsolicited bid for Diebold. UTC originally made an offer for the company Feb. 29, 2008.

Diebold’s John Lauer, the non-executive chairman of the board, says Diebold’s financial improvement has shed new light on the company’s outlook and strategic initiatives.
"This gives the board confidence that Diebold is on-course for creating substantial shareholder value for its investors, despite current global financial market conditions," he said.

Diebold on Sept. 30 increased its 2008 earnings expectations when it released its financial reports for 2007 and the first two quarters of 2008. The company’s earnings expectations are the result of earlier-than-expected progress from its cost-reduction initiatives, improved profitability from the company's Brazilian voting and lottery businesses, continued demand for the company's solutions in the global financial markets and a lower anticipated effective tax rate.

"Since 2006, we have focused on putting the right leadership in place, improving the key drivers of profitability and positioning the company for future growth," said Thomas W. Swidarski, Diebold’s president and chief executive. "We are now seeing the tangible results of these efforts. Recognizing there's much more for us to accomplish, I am increasingly confident in our strategies and our ability to execute on those strategies."

McKinney's prison-to-paradise story drew national attention. He arrived in Hawaii in 2001 and started his Island ATM business with his $1.7 million settlement from the Orange County Police Department. At the time of his death he owned 42 ATMs on three islands and had a net worth of more than $6 million, said Carl Stein, whose company processed transactions for McKinney.

MESA, Ariz. — According to a news release, Better ATM Services has reached agreements with Automated Cash Management Systems and APTUS Financial to dispense Amazon.com gift cards at ATMs across the nation.

The two ISOs will be part of a special pilot program in which Amazon.com gift cards will be distributed with a free $25 Restaurant.com promotional card. Dallas–based Columbus Data Services will provide transaction processing services for the program.

Better ATM Services also has become a reseller of Amazon.com gift cards, allowing Amazon.com gift cards to be distributed through ATM networks owned and operated by ISOs throughout the United States. The Amazon.com gift card is immediately valid for use toward purchase of any of the millions of items offered for sale at Amazon.com.

"Tough economic times mean consumers will increasingly demand more value," said Better ATM Services chief executive Todd Nuttall. "Gift cards with coupons and incentives distributed through ATMs provide just that."

Gift cards make up the largest segment of prepaid cards. Boston-based TowerGroup estimates that approximately $80 billion was spent on gift cards in 2006. Based on Mercator Advisory Group research, that total included approximately 600 million cards that were sold in-store.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Diebold Inc.'s share price went up 3.6 percent yesterday after the company filed its delinquent earnings results for 2007 and the first and second quarters of 2008. The company raised its earnings expectations for 2008 and reported 2007 year-end revenue of $2.97 billion and net income of $40 million.

Earnings per share guidance for the rest of 2008 has increased from $1.47-$1.37 per share to $1.62-$1.52 per share.

In a news release, Diebold said the upward revision in earnings expectations are the result of earlier-than-expected progress from cost-reduction initiatives, improved profitability from the Brazilian voting and lottery businesses, continued demand for the solutions in the global financial markets, and a lower-than-anticipated effective tax rate.

"We are very pleased that we have become current with our financial reporting, which has been a top priority for the company for more than a year," said Thomas W. Swidarski, Diebold president and chief executive. "The significant progress we've made in our cost-reduction initiatives has resulted in some of our anticipated savings coming in earlier than planned. This continued progress in reducing costs positions us well as we work toward achieving our profitability goals for 2009 and beyond. In addition, our global sales environment remains solid despite the well-publicized challenges facing the financial industry in the United States."

Revenue for 2007 was up .8 percent when compared with restated revenue of $2.94 billion for 2006, while net income was down 62 percent from the $105 million reported in '06.

Diebold says its future performance hinges on timing of a self-service upgrade and/or replacement cycle in mature markets, such as the Unites States; high levels of deployment growth for new self-service products in emerging markets, such as Asia-Pacific; demand for new service offerings, including outsourcing or operating a network of ATMs; demand beyond expectations for security products and services for the financial, retail and government sectors; implementation and timeline for new election systems in the United States, the company's strong financial position; and the company's ability to successfully integrate acquisitions.

"Since 2006, we have focused on putting the right leadership in place, improving the key drivers of profitability and positioning the company for future growth," Swidarski said. "We are now seeing the tangible results of these efforts. Recognizing there's much more for us to accomplish, I am increasingly confident in our strategies and our ability to execute on those strategies."

Additionally, in its annual report, which it filed yesterday, Diebold says it expects to successfully cut $100 million from its expenses by the end of the year — a goal defined by its Smart Business 100 program to reduce expenses. Diebold also expects to cut its global workforce by 800 full-time positions, which account for about 5 percent of its overall employment. The majority of those cuts are expected to occur in North America, Brazil and parts of Western Europe.

Thomas Swidarski, president and chief executive of Diebold Inc., reiterated his company's focus on providing ATM and security-related services during a conference call with investors on Sept. 10.

"What's our mission as a company?" Swidarski asked. "It's pretty crystal clear that we're transforming our focus to value-added services. That's what we're moving toward."

"Most of the competitors that we deal with are heavily influenced on the product side — it might be 60/40 on the product, services," he said, adding that Diebold's emphasis is split 50/50 between the two offerings.

Swidarski said that, in the future, Diebold expects to provide services in a vast array of verticals, including healthcare and government. He cited a recent contract to implement a nationwide security upgrade at 40,000 U.S. Postal Service locations as evidence that Diebold has made inroads in the government sector.

"It amounts to what could potentially be a 12-year contract — a very enormous contract," Swidarski said. "Why was Diebold uniquely qualified to do it? Two reasons. One: nationwide service infrastructure, second to none. Two: security expertise. That's a wonderful opportunity for us and it leverages the investments we've made in various security operations in the last three or four years."

Charles E. Ducey, Jr., senior vice president of global development and services at Diebold, offered an optimistic view of the future of the ATM industry, saying he expects the global ATM market to grow six to eight percent over the next three years, due to increased interest in deposit automation, promulgation of ATM-based services and increases in the number of ATMs deployed.

NEWARK, Calif. — Tranax Technologies Inc. has announced its sale to Eltna, a Korean holding corporation.

According to a news release, Eltna holds companies involved with ATM systems and components, as well as companies in the imaging, design and manufacturing space.

In the past, Eltna has worked with Tranax as an original equipment manufacturer for Tranax ATMs. As a result, the two companies have a history of working together, with compatible corporate cultures and a shared vision for the market.

"We are very pleased to announce the merge of Tranax into the Eltna group of companies," said Dr. Hansup Kwon, president and chief executive of Tranax. "Joining forces with Eltna enables us to form a strong, new, vertically integrated company with direct manufacturing and best-in-class ATM components and systems. The new entity will continue under the Tranax name, in order to leverage the company's strong brand and reputation. The new enterprise provides the financial base from which to be more efficient and build competitive advantage for the long term."

Tranax will become part of Eltna Corp.

Eltna's CEO, Won-Gee Lee, will assume the role of CEO of the new entity after a period of transition, along with a new chief financial officer provided by the holding company. "The degree of integration of those elements, plant location, critical processes, specialized components and quality control, will determine who succeeds. We believe the new vertically integrated company will direct manufacturing, product know-how and the depth of market experience that Tranax brings will create a strong new Tranax. We are looking forward to the challenge."

PADERBORN, Germany — Wincor Nixdorf has been awarded a comprehensive order by Nordea to install and operate 500 transaction terminals in Finland, according to a news release.

For a period of five years, Wincor Nixdorf will provide services ranging from system monitoring and software management to network operation, all as part of its Managed Services offering. All the systems will be run with the network-centric software ProClassic Enterprise, which will be provided on a central Wincor Nixdorf server. Wincor Nixdorf's eServices Platform will ensure continual monitoring of system operation and coordinate both software management and maintenance by the Customer Care Center. Wincor Nixdorf will also assume responsibility for other services, such as replenishing printer paper in the systems. As a result, the high availability of all the systems is guaranteed.

Travis K. Kircher, editor of SelfService.org, contributed to this article.

Executives from Nautilus Hyosung Inc. visited Long Beach, Miss., last week to meet with employees at Triton Systems of Delaware Inc. — the ATM manufacturer that's known for its entry-level, retail ATMs that Nautilus Hyosung in late July announced plans to acquire.

The two companies say the visit was organized by management to put to rest "rumors" and concerns that the acquisition might in some way adversely affect Triton's operations in Mississippi.

"Nautilus Hyosung is very interested in growing the two businesses, independently, to three to four times the size that they are right now," said Alicia Blanda, spokeswoman for Triton. "Nautilus Hyosung wants to grow the combined businesses to a $1 billion company, and they have told us they plan to invest in people, facilities and products."

But a number of new concerns have emerged, not just from the industry but also from the community where Triton is based. Located along the Gulf Coast, the community of Long Beach, which was physically and economically devastated by Hurricane Katrina three years ago, relies heavily on Triton for employment and tax dollars.

Shortly after Triton's parent, New York-based Dover Corp., announced its plans to sell the business, school administrators in Long Beach voiced concern about losing hundreds of thousands of tax dollars the school system annually receives from Triton. And some industry analysts and independent sales organizations — Triton's and Nautilus Hyosung's best U.S. customers — began talking of market domination, less competitive ATM pricing and an overall consolidated market where only a few of the strong could survive.

Triton and Nautilus Hyosung say those fears are unfounded, and they both argue that the acquisition will have a positive effect on the industry.

A market of a few

The question of whether this deal creates a monopoly is one the government is likely to watch closely, says Sam Ditzion, chief executive of Boston-based Tremont Capital Group, a strategic-planning and merger and acquisition consultancy that advises ATM companies.

"Regulators historically have been particularly focused on blocking deals that will lead to increased prices for consumers, which this deal does not appear to do," he said. "Furthermore, it's important to keep in mind that antitrust laws aren't violated solely when a company's intense competition and lower prices take business away from less efficient competitors, as regulators typically view that as the markets working effectively."

If the deal does increase prices, that could benefit the market. The so-called price wars, which over the last few years have driven pricing down for off-premises ATMs, have taken their toll, most industry experts agree. Manufacturers that cater to the ISO market have been operating at a loss for far too long.

"Price is probably going to go up, and it's not because of a lack of competition. I think it's just time," said Phil Suitt, a long-time Triton distributor. Suitt said, "The retail-market-equipment pricing has been depressed far longer than I thought it would be."

Some say the deal could actually benefit companies like Tranax, which is focusing its business on higher-end multifunctional kiosks and ATMs, not just cash dispensers — which remain Triton's specialty.

"Bottom line, I don't think anybody knows if this is good for the industry or not," said Bill Dunn, vice president of sales for Newark, Calif.-based Tranax Technologies Inc., Nautilus Hyosung's former U.S. ATM distributor. "I do think it's safe to assume that there will be some sort of price increase. Will it be on the ATMs or on the parts? We will just have to wait and see."

Nicole Sturgill, a research director for Boston-based financial-industry consultancy TowerGroup, says future market demand will not be so focused on price but, rather, functions, features and service.

"Going forward, the question will not be who can sell the least expensive cash dispenser. It's going to be who can provide the new features and functionality that can drive customers to the ATM, who can use the ATM as a sales opportunity, and who can make the ATM profitable," she said.

The days of $1,500 to $3,000 cash dispensers are likely over.

Sturgill says market consolidation could lead to the birth of a new ATM player — one that falls into the mid-level, a section left open in the Triton-Nautilus Hyosung deal. (Nautilus Hyosung says it's aiming for U.S. growth from the financial-institution side of business.)

"There has been a lot of consolidation over the last few years, but banks and retailers still have numerous vendors from which to choose," she said. "There's also no reason to say that a new vendor couldn't emerge. Competition will continue."

Carlos Siewczynski, vice president of retail self-service sales for Nautilus Hyosung America Inc., which is owned by Seoul, Korea-based Nautilus Hyosung, says the retail ATM market in the United States is already more competitive than most industry observers realize.

"Contrary to popular perception, the retail market is large, especially considering the mid-range market, such as bank-branded retail/off-premise machines sold by Diebold, NCR and Wincor Nixdorf in supermarkets and national c-store chains," Siewczynski said. "In addition to the big three, Tranax, Trantech, Greenlink, Moneytree, WRG and GRG also are all competitors in the retail market."

Sealing the deal

Tremont’s Ditzion says Siewczynski’s more open definition of market competition is likely the one the Department of Justice will consider when making its decision about approval of the Triton-Nautilus Hyosung union.

"The first task regulators will undertake is defining whether the relevant market is the entire ATM-manufacturing industry or just the industry of ATM manufacturers that focus on selling equipment to ISOs," Ditzion said. "Their second priority will be to evaluate whether the combined company creates a monopolistic or anti-competitive environment in that relevant market. If the Department of Justice were to file an antitrust suit — and it's important to emphasize 'if' — the case would either go to trial or require a negotiated settlement that addresses regulators' concerns, both of which could kill the deal or delay it until well into 2009. Otherwise, if it's not opposed, the deal will probably close within the next month."

How the union of Triton and Nautilus Hyosung will impact the retail ATM market in the United States remains to be seen. But most industry observers agree the deal will benefit both of the companies.

"Certainly the acquisition will increase Nautilus Hyosung's market share in the countries in which both Triton and Nautilus Hyosung operate — the U.S., U.K. and Australia," Sturgill said. "In these countries, Nautilus Hyosung will have a tremendous presence, particularly among the ISOs, community banks, savings and loans, and credit unions. As we have seen in the U.S., Nautilus Hyosung wants to increase their presence in banking, and Triton is an ideal complement to augment their experience in that market."

The sharing of resources will benefit both companies, says Suitt, and the reduced costs of manufacturing some parts and equipment overseas will benefit Triton's line.

"Triton was the only manufacturer that I know of besides WRG that makes anything in the U.S.," he said. "Triton waited far too long to go offshore for manufacturing."

James Phillips, Triton's director of North American sales, says economic pressures are pushing manufacturers to consider offshore options.

"It's simply due to the costs associated with manufacturing these days," he said. "Freight costs have been up because of fuel costs. Steel has gone up, and so everybody is really looking at ways to control costs — especially with certain markets like the U.S., where price dictates whether you're going to sell a machine or not."

But Phillips is quick to point out that he doesn't expect the use of offshore manufacturing to adversely impact Triton's operations in Mississippi and Tennessee. In fact, he says Triton and Nautilus Hyosung spent last week talking about expanding facilities in the two states.

"We're looking at sharing and expanding our R and D department – the manufacturing and service capabilities of Triton, specifically," he said.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Diebold Inc. is strengthening its presence in the South American financial self-service market. After signing one of the industry's largest ATM deals in May with Brazil's Caixa Economica Federal, Diebold has further strengthened its position through a deal with Brazil's largest financial institution, Banco do Brasil.

According to a news release, Banco do Brasil will use the more than 5,400 ATMs and check dispensers it has purchased from Diebold to expand its reach to new and existing customers at its branches and new retail locations.

Diebold is providing around 3,500 ATMs and 1,900 checkbook-printing terminals. The new ATMs, which are replacing older units, will include encrypting PIN pads and advanced anti-skimming technology, electronic-access control and safe-locking capabilities.

Diebold also will provide the software platform and operating system to drive the ATMs.

"We're excited to assist Banco do Brasil in expanding its network, increasing ATM security and promoting its brand at a time when Brazil is experiencing such exceptional growth," said Joao Abud Jr., president of Diebold Brazil. "This expansion will enable the financial institution to reap significant benefits from its high-visibility position, as well as from its top-quality customer service."

Banco do Brasil has 40,000 ATMs in Brazil and is participating in a countrywide trend to replace ATMs 10 years of age or older.

Being a valued customer, his bank manager offered him an ATM card, explaining the card's numerous benefits. But the septuagenarian farmer turned down the offer and still adheres to old practices of money withdrawal. A majority of farmers from this sugarcane belt are averse to using an ATM card, a new banking technology that is being promoted by bankers in order to reduce pressure on banks.

Travis Kircher, editor of SelfService.org, contributed to this article.

U.S. Bank ($247 billion in assets), the lead bank of U.S. Bancorp and owner of Elan Financial Services, announced plans this week to acquire most of Palm Desert National Bank's Electronic Banking Division.

The deal includes the sale of California-based PDNB's ATM and kiosk-management services, as well as its cash-management and vault-cash operations, which manages nearly $1 billion in vault cash for more than 22,000 ATMs and kiosks in the United States.
PDNB's merchant processing, prepaid/stored-value cards and ACH services are not part of the deal. And financial terms of the sale, which is expected to close by late third-quarter or early fourth-quarter 2008, were not disclosed.

About 60 PDNB employees are expected to become part of Elan Financial Services, including key executives such as Sandra Hartfield, the president and chief executive of PDNB's Electronic Banking Division. Elan also plans to maintain PDNB's operations centers in Palm Desert, Calif., and Lafayette, La., where PDNB offers complete terminal-management and vault-cash solutions to financial institutions and independent sales organizations.

A changing industry

The sale marks a turning point for both companies — for U.S. Bank, a sign of continued growth; for PDNB, the ending of an era.

For the last three years, U.S. Bank's Elan, founded in 1997, has been on a buying spree to bulk its ATM-services portfolio. In May 2005, U.S. Bank acquired Genpass Technologies, operator of the MoneyPass, MoneyMaker and Money Belt ATM networks. The purchase made Elan the second-largest third-party ATM processor in the United States — second only to Colorado-based First Data Corp., which operates the STAR Network.

Elan operates more than 37,000 ATMs nationwide.

This deal with PDNB, says Gary Staub, Elan's executive vice president for strategic initiatives, offers similar rewards.

"We believe this deal makes us the largest provider of ATM and kiosk vault cash in the United States," Staub said. "We definitely have a solid presence in the ISO business now. The goal is to grow our payments business, and this deal expands our product offering."

For PDNB's Electronic Banking Division, founded in 1994, the sale marks a turning point, one that will take it from being a leader in vault-cash services for independent ATM operators to a provider of targeted services, such as prepaid and stored-value cards — which, among other things, target cash-preferred/underserved consumers.

PDNB is best known for its reverse-cash methodology — part of its TRAKKERSM software program, which automates backroom management, from cash forecasting and ordering to reconciliation and settlement. The system helped to revolutionize cash services for the ATM and kiosk industry.

The reverse-cash service developed by PDNB enabled deployers to provide more advanced financial self-service solutions, such as bill payment, which targets underserved consumers who prefer to use cash to pay bills.

"Palm Desert National Bank has been a pioneer in the ATM industry and we are proud of the part we have played in the ATM industry's growth," Hartfield said. "We have always been committed to providing exceptional products and service."

The sale to U.S. Bank, Hartfield says, will allow Elan to offer more comprehensive services to the industry.

PDNB's cash services helped fuel growth in the late 1990s for newcomers like Burnaby, British Columbia-based TIO Networks Corp., a billpay service provider that has worked closely with PDNB's Electronic Banking Division since its inception.

But Hamed Shahbazi, chairman and chief executive of TIO Networks, says the sale to U.S. Bank is a good and merely supports PDNB's desire to focus on "growth" businesses, like prepaid/stored-value services.

"I think a lot of this comes down to where the ATM industry stands currently, and vault cash not being a growth business," Shahbazi said. "I think it's an excellent event for the industry. Bringing together the two key innovators for vault cash, and eventually the whole back-office of the ATM, at a time when I think the industry needs leadership and innovation more than ever, brings together a lot of leadership to one company. All in all, two thumbs up. We love it."

Sam Ditzion, chief executive of Boston-based Tremont Capital Group, a strategic-planning, merger and acquisition ATM consultancy, says the deal is further example of the industry's consolidation.

"This transaction represents yet another example of the significant and continuing consolidation in each and every sector within the ATM industry," Ditzion said. "Stay tuned, as there will be much more to come."

Ditzion agreed that the deal may reflect PDNB's interest in other business opportunities.

"This is a very significant acquisition, as it clearly solidifies Elan's position as the overwhelmingly dominate player in the nation's non-bank ATM-vault-cash space," he said. "This deal might also be an indication that Palm Desert has reduced its appetite for risk and could reflect a decision to focus more on its core and higher growth businesses.”

The device, comprising a dual metal plate that acts as a shock absorber, has helped stop hundreds of ATM thieves since being introduced in Australia. Inventor Richard Gould, who will unveil the Raminator on ABC Television's The New Inventors program tomorrow night, says it is a simple idea that basically tilts the ATM on an angle and bolts it firmly in place when attacked.

SINGAPORE — Wincor Nixdorf International has secured a deal to provide ATMs to Banktech, an independent ATM provider in Australia.

According to a news release, the Sydney-based Banktech has agreed to purchase and deploy 100 ProCash 1500xe's as part of its 'CashConnect' ATM network via Wincor Nixdorf's local partner ITS, a subsidiary of Australia's Armaguard. Banktech's wholly owned subsidiary, EFTEX, will drive and process the ATMs with deployment commencing in October.

"We are pleased to be working with Wincor Nixdorf," said David Glen, Banktech's managing director. "They understand that helping Banktech grow its business will also grow their business in Australia. This long-term view is reflected in the high quality of their products and their significant on-going investment in R&D. We are confident they are excellent global partners."

The ATMs will run on an open-architecture-software platform allowing multivendor implementation with an existing infrastructure. Additionallly, 100 units will be protected by Wincor Nixdorf’s latest IT security solution.

"What we bring to the table is additional value to our customers in order to excite them and create fresh business ideas together," said David Yip, Australia business development manager for Wincor Nixdorf.

With the closing of a U.S. manufacturing hub, withdrawal from one European market and consolidation of operations and services throughout the world, the world's third-largest ATM manufacturer says it's expecting 2008 to end on a high financial note.

Yesterday, North Canton, Ohio-based Diebold Inc. released preliminary earnings for the second quarter of 2008, with some guidance for the rest of the year and early 2009.

Among the takeaways from the investors' call was the announcement that Diebold is closing its Newark, Ohio, manufacturing facility — a closure that will lead to the cutting of 100 jobs. Tom Swidarski, Diebold's president and chief executive, said the cuts are part of the company's plans to reduce its global workforce by 5 percent (800 jobs) by the end of the year — a plan Diebold announced in February.

And when the United Technologies Corp. bid hit the wires back in March, it only fueled ever-growing suspicions among industry observers that Diebold was in some serious financial trouble.

Diebold shrugged off the UTC bid, saying the proffer was unsolicited and unexpected. But some industry insiders question Diebold's response, saying the UTC offer could be a viable one.

No mention, however, of the UTC offer was made during the call Monday. More attention was paid to Diebold's restructuring efforts and anticipated growth in financial-self-service products and services.

Diebold said the loss of its Newark plant, which makes security equipment, will be absorbed by Diebold's Lexington, N.C., plant, which currently manufacturers the Opteva ATM line.
Layoffs are expected to begin in October.

"A total of 800 is the number we communicated in February, and to date, we are 75 percent of the way there," Swidarski said during the Aug. 11 investors' call. "Some of that has to do with (what we are doing in) other parts of the world."

VIDEO: See Tom Swidarski on CNBC during Power Lunch.

Over the next several months, Diebold will move production of its Opteva line from Lexington, N.C., to Shanghai, China, and Hungary, where Diebold already has production facilities that manufacture financial self-service products.

From there, Swidarski said, Diebold will focus the last six months of the year on closing 86 of its U.S. warehouses — reducing the total number of warehouses in three "strategically" located areas.

"We are improving our supply chain and production distribution," he said.

Earlier this month, Diebold also announced plans to exit Germany, where strong market competition has prevented Diebold from making significant inroads. Instead, the company plans to place greater attention on business growth in Central and Eastern Europe,  Asia-Pacific and the Americas.

In 2006, Diebold closed a manufacturing facility in Cassis, France, also part of its plans to restructure and realign costs.

"Europe is our slowest market," Swidarski said. "We are making strategic decisions there because we don't have the infrastructure in Western Europe like our competitors do. But we feel good about Eastern Europe and we will continue to invest there, and we will be more dependent on Hungary as we go forward."

Diebold anticipates an 11 percent increase in revenue from the second quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2008, with most of the growth coming from the financial self-service and outsourced-servicing growth. Second-quarter revenue is expected to hit $771 million. The company plans to hit margin targets of 7 percent in 2008 and between 9 percent and 10 percent in 2009.

Year to date, Diebold's revenue is $1.5 billion, up 9.3 percent from last year.

"In the Americas, I feel like we're in a very strong position," Swidarski said, "even though the market is up and down in the Americas. Brazil is just in a very unique position, because of their trust over the years and their move toward outsourcing. We received one of the biggest ATM orders in history, and we’re taking that and leveraging that across the board."

Growth in its servicing business will be key going forward.

"A lot of the investments we have made benefit the service business," Swidarski said. "Plus, those are longer-term projects, which are sticky and good for the customer."

Diebold reported preliminary net income of $25.6 million, 38 cents per share, for 2Q 2008, down from $26.9 million, 40 cents per share, reported for 2Q 2007.

Growth in the company's financial self-service revenue, which is expected to be up 15 percent from 2Q '07, has been fuelled by the Olympics, Swidarski said, but he expects Diebold's growth in China to continue.

"If you look at the Asia region, we had a very successful early part of 2008, especially from China," he said. "We face stiff competition there, from manufacturers in Japan, but we are building out our Opteva line there and it looks promising."

Despite challenges in the U.S. financial market, Swidarksi says Diebold continues to see growth in its product sales.

"This is partly driven by an increased demand for deposit automation, where approximately one out of every two Opteva full-function ATMs shipped in 2008 is equipped with deposit-automation technology," he said.

From there, Diebold will move from product relationships to servicing relationships.

In Brazil, where Diebold says it holds 60 percent of the market, product and outsourced-servicing relationships go hand in hand.

"In the U.S. we have 10,000 banks, and we are just beginning to scratch the surface there (with deposit automation)," Swidarski said. "We are taking various vendors down to one, when we start looking at all of our service. From that perspective, we are starting with the smaller FIs and credit unions, with the smaller ATM networks of 20 or 30, and moving our way out."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With more complex banking transactions moving to the ATM, deployers are relying more heavily on innovative software solutions to manage their networks.

Many ATMs now have features like envelope-free deposits, as well as enhanced advertising and personalized transactions. The devices have moved beyond basic cash dispensers, and the software that guides them is growing more complex as well.

Those software trends and developments are outlined in ATM Software: Trends Analysis for 2007-2008, which is sponsored by KAL, a global ATM-software company based in Scotland.

"Running a single software application across an entire ATM network was in most markets a revolutionary concept just three to five years ago," said Tracy Kitten, editor of ATM Marketplace and the report's author. "Today, it’s quickly becoming commonplace."

Rather than using proprietary software, ATM deployers are increasingly moving to multivendor programs that can run across any Windows-based ATM network, regardless of the type or brand of hardware.

According to Retail Banking Research Ltd., a research firm based in England, 15 percent of the world's ATMs had moved to multivendor software at the end of 2007.

"Ultimately, those banks that made the move are at a level where all the infrastructure issues have been resolved — meaning they are able to, relatively speaking, seamlessly work with multiple (ATM) vendors," said Aravinda Korala, KAL's chief executive.

The 50-page report, a must-read for those in the banking industry, explores the issues that are driving these changes in ATM software and looks at other industry trends, like the evolution of the ATM as a marketing vehicle. The report also highlights leading software companies and the solutions they offer.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Financial breaches and identity theft cases seem to be in the headlines on an almost regular basis. Just last month, hackers broke into a Citibank-branded ATM network and stole millions. What's more interesting, though, is that the criminals gained access to customer PINs — the pieces of data that are seemingly most secure.

The security landscape is definitely changing, and in a new ATM Marketplace guide, Bank Branch Security in the 21st Century, FIs can find help navigating their way through the security labyrinth.

"Criminals are becoming ever more imaginative when it comes to stealing cards and identity codes required to fetch cash from ATMs around the world," said Uwe Krause, director of banking marketing for Wincor Nixdorf International, which sponsored the report. "Subsequently, many bank customers are increasingly concerned about the security of their confidential data and savings."

Written by Tracy Kitten, senior editor of ATM Marketplace, the report examines security-enhancing methods and products, and offers a look into the future of security in the banking industry. Packed with informative data and sound tips, the key take-away from the publication is that, for financial institutions, the time to get smart about 360-degree branch security is now.

"In short," Kitten said, "security is about ensuring that all of an FI’s banking channels are communicating with one another."

Shreveport (La.) Times: A proposed amendment to city and parish law in Shreveport, La., could limit the hours one ATM can be open. Currently, the Ouachita Independent Bank operates a 24-hour ATM, but the proposed zoning amendment would limit the ATM's hours of operation to between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The bank's management says the amendment unfairly targets the bank's business.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Web site created by NSA, provider of field-marketing and image-presentation services for large-scale ATM deployments, is supplying ATM deployers with access to the new universal ATM pictogram recently released by the ATM Industry Association.

"We anticipate 85,000 ATMs will be signed using the pictogram in the first year, with some 20,000 in the U.S. alone," said Chuck West, NSA's chief executive. "The usage will increase exponentially as more ATM sites realize its value."ATM_symbol.jpg

According to a news release, NSA is helping ATMIA market the new pictogram and is allowing users from the across the world to order pictogram signage from its site.

"Partnering with an organization that delivers swift, dependable service and cost advantages in image solutions is a natural fit with our aligned visions of increasing foot traffic to ATMs and improving transaction volumes," said Lana Harmelink, ATMIA's international director.

Customers can place pictogram orders by accessing the NSA Web site.

"This will really help travelers and merchants alike," said Kirk Huddleston, former chairman and current commissioner of Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority. "It's a simple and effective public service to travelers who need cash. Strange airports or travel destinations can be confusing places. The pictogram makes it easy to find an ATM — and even eliminates language barriers. Also important is that airport merchants should see more purchases made with cash from increased ATM usage."Add/Edit Blog Categories

The (Sarasota, Fla.) Herald Tribune — Some theives just can't read the handwriting on the wall — or at least the 'out of order' sign. When an employee of the Lox 'n Egg Bread Company showed up for work over the weekend, he was surprised to discover that the ATM was missing. What was even more surprising was the fact that the thieves bothered to steal an ATM that was not only empty, but had a yellow sign attached to it that indicated it was out of order.

PADERBORN, Germany — PrivatBank, based in Ukraine, has further strengthened its self-service business with the purchase and installation of 3,100 Wincor Nixdorf ATMs for sites in Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Cyprus and Latvia, according to a news release.

In addition, the bank plans to test the use of ATM-based advertisements as part of an extensive pilot project. Alongside an application designed for personalized interaction with customers at the ATM, all systems will be equipped with special monitoring software.

The monitoring and IT service management software, ProView, connects the ATMs with the bank's IT management center, thus allowing PrivatBank to monitor its systems online around the clock and to maintain maximum availability of the self-service network. Additionally, ProView is designed to provide a wide range of other useful features, such as the management of software updates and remote access to the ATMs.

In total, 100 systems within the network will be equipped with ProSales Marketing, a software developed specifically for direct marketing via self-service devices. Prior to this extensive pilot project, initial tests had been successfully completed on five systems. In addition to promoting bank-related products and services, the bank also is looking to implement a system that allows customers to provide direct feedback by means of response functions incorporated into the ATMs.

The approach pursued by PrivatBank is to evolve its self-service business into a fully fledged communication, sales and service channel. The bank already offers services such as the recharging of prepaid cards for cellphones, the payment of bills and international money transfers. The systems are capable of processing banknote deposits.

In installing the new generation of ATMs, PrivatBank will phase out its portfolio of older systems supplied by other manufacturers and create a homogeneous network based on state-of-the-art technology developed by Wincor Nixdorf. The decision in favor of a consistent system platform will produce tangible benefits in the area of servicing and maintenance. At the same time, new products and services can be developed faster and more cost-effectively, according to the release.

PrivatBank has issued a total of 16.6 million bank cards to its customers. It operates 2,910 bank branches and has a network comprising 4,700 ATMs.

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — The PCI Security Standards Council, a global, open industry standards body providing management of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (DSS), PCI PIN Entry Device (PED) Security Requirements and the Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS), has announced the addition of two new payment industry device types to the PED program to strengthen cardholder data security.

Unattended payment terminals and hardware (also known as host) security modules now can undergo a rigorous testing and approval program to ensure they comply with industry standards for securing sensitive payment card data during any point in the transaction process. The Council also will maintain the list of approved UPTs and HSMs, provide documentation and training for labs evaluating these devices and be a single source of information for device vendors and their customers.

The PED Security Requirements are designed to ensure the security of PIN-based transactions globally and apply to devices that accept PIN entry. Until now, the requirements focused on traditional point-of-sale devices that operate in an environment that is attended by a merchant, cashier or sales clerk. UPTs are unattended payment devices that include self-service ticketing machines, kiosks, automated fuel pumps and vending machines. Vendors have been manufacturing and having the encrypting PIN pads (EPPs) that go into UPTs evaluated by approved labs, and the payment card brands have been requiring the use of PCI SSC approved EPPs. Having new and overarching UPT testing requirements will further protect the payment card industry participants.

HSMs are secure cryptographic devices that can be used for PIN translation, card personalization, electronic commerce or data protection and do not include any type of cardholder interface. The addition of UPTs and HSMs into the PCI SSC security testing requirements enables the Council to provide testing laboratories with a streamlined evaluation process for achieving compliance of these cryptographic devices.

"PIN entry devices go well beyond the typical POS terminals we are all familiar with and we are continually expanding into more and more areas," said Bob Russo, general manager of the PCI Security Standards Council. "Any device that processes personal identification numbers is an important link in the transaction chain. By including both UPTs and HSMs in the PED Security Requirements, the Council is reaffirming its commitment to developing additional standards to meet the needs of the industry and to ensure continued safety and security for consumers."

LISBON, Portugal — Paderborn, Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf International welcomed guests of its International Management Seminar, this year in Lisbon, with dinner and entertainment at the Páteo Alfacinha, a venue that offers visitors a taste of 20th-century Portugal.

Wincor Nixdorf’s 200 or so guests, representing 34 countries, were entertained by local students, who sang and performed in traditional Portuguese style.
TracyWincor1a.jpg
Attendees spent the evening at Lisbon's Pateo Alfacinha, an establishment known for its Portuguese flare.
But today it was all business, with a morning announcement that the once-third-ranked global ATM deployer has now assumed the No. 2 position, trailing only Dayton, Ohio’s NCR Corp., according to 2007 shipment figures tracked by England’s Retail Banking Research Ltd.

RBR reports that Wincor Nixdorf increased its global ATM deliveries from 18 percent in 2006 to 21 percent in 2007.

“Moving up to the No. 2 slot is yet another milestone in our success story,” said Stefan Auerbach, Wincor Nixdorf’s executive vice president of banking as well as a member of the company’s board of directors. “Our portfolio, as a provider of integrated hardware, software, and services, strengthens our position as a leading IT-solution supplier in the international retail-banking business.”

Auerbach opened the day’s events with a presentation outlining Wincor Nixdorf’s growth. In 1994, Wincor Nixdorf was No. 12 in global ATM shipments. By 2000, the company had moved to the No. 3 slot.

Auerbach attributes Wincor Nixdorf’s growth to specific strategies in key markets, including the United States and Asia — two markets where Wincor Nixdorf has focused much attention over the last three years.

And the proof is in numbers.

Wincor Nixdorf’s first-half results for the 2007/2008 fiscal year are coming in higher than forecasted. From the first half of FY 2006/2007, the company’s business in the Americas is up 29 percent; in Asia-Pacific and Africa, it’s up 32 percent; and in Europe, it’s up 9 percent.

Only the company’s business in Germany saw a decrease, falling 7 percent from the same period last year.

“Despite the sub prime crisis, which is being felt in Germany and throughout the world, we continue to see growth in banking,” Auerbach said. “The good news is that the banking business worldwide is expected to grow by a multiple of four over the next 15 years, and we are positioning ourselves for the growth.”

Acting global, thinking local has contributed to the company’s growth, Auerbach says, and likely led to the 11 additional international participants Wincor Nixdorf welcomed to its event this year.

“Branch and ATM channels in every big, established market remain the strongest banking touchpoints,” he said. “And we developed a global strategy to meet those needs, because we understood that we had to be more global. So we have developed strong partnerships and service relationships in all of our markets.”

TracyWincor2a.jpg
The view from the Pateo Alfacinha.
Organic growth is expected to remain the company’s strategy, said one Wincor Nixdorf spokesman, despite some rumors that Wincor Nixdorf could be in the running for an acquisition of the cash-systems business operated by England-based De La Rue.

Growth through acquisition has not been a method Wincor Nixdorf has had success with in the past. Internal growth, on the other hand, is working.

Since FY 1999/2000, when 51 percent of Wincor Nixdorf’s business was based in Germany, the company has increased its international penetration across Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas.

In FY ’99/’00, only 38 percent of Wincor Nixdorf’s business came from European countries beyond Germany. Today the percentage is 52.

In Asia/Pacific, the business percentage in ’99/’00 was 7 — today it is 13 percent. And in the Americas, only 4 percent of the company’s business could be attributed to the region in ’99/’00 — today the breakdown is 8 percent.

In fact, over the next few months, Wincor Nixdorf has announced plans to install some 7,000 ATMs in Asia, namely because of a strong partnership with First Data Corp. in Australia.

All three regions represent key markets, but so does Africa, where Nigeria is quickly becoming one of Wincor Nixdorf’s most-prized markets, Auerbach said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — David Drain, the executive director of the Self-Service & Kiosk Association, will explain how credit unions can better use self-service technology during his address at the 26th Annual Bottom Line Conference in Las Vegas.

Drain's address will take place at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Paris Las Vegas hotel.

He says his speech will explain why the self-service technology industry has exploded in the last 10 years and provide a roadmap for what credit unions can expect to see in the future.

"Credit unions are in a unique position in the financial services industry, being non-profit institutions," Drain said. "However, they do compete with banks for customers and they need every advantage they can get. Customers need 24/7 access to their accounts and self-service technology allows them to do that outside of normal banking hours. Branch automation  such as the ability to make envelope-less deposits and loan payments at a kiosk or ATM  is becoming a competitive necessity for any financial institution."

DAYTON, Ohio — NCR Corp. says it has released a new kind of ATM — one that addresses today’s most critical banking issues.

The NCR SelfServ line is a new family of ATMs with first-of-its-kind self-healing technology, NCR says. NCR SelfServ ATMs offer greater availability and enhanced manageability tools to provide consistent service. Changes to the servicing and operational functionalities available in this new ATM family are expected to help NCR customers streamline their business processes and create new efficiencies.

NCR SelfServ also helps drive deposit and revenue growth by delivering a range of transaction services, such as bulk-check deposit, bill-payment or local-governmental fine-processing, while at the same time making the device consumer-friendly.

Offered in both cash-dispensing and full-function lines, NCR SelfServ is available as a cash dispenser or a full-function ATM. And because the new line requires less human intervention, staffs gain time for serving and satisfying the end customer.

“NCR SelfServ is a key tenet in our strategy to connect the consumer experience across the ATM, the Internet and mobility,” said Bob Tramontano, vice president of marketing for NCR.  “Today’s technology innovations can better meet changing consumer expectations and habits.  By deploying an ATM with unparalleled efficiency and operational gains, NCR customers can sharpen their focus on the business of banking and customer service interaction, and focus less on whether their ATM channel is up and running.”

DAYTON, Ohio · NCR Corp. reported a 17 percent sales increase in its financial self-service unit, growth the company attributes to greater demand in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. And though the company's overall net income dropped 63 percent, when compared with the same period in 2006, NCR did raise its full-year earnings per share forecast for the year to between $1.20 and $1.25.

The comapny also realized revenue growth, hitting $1.28 billion, up from revenue of $1.14 billion during the third quarter of '06.

Costs related with the Oct. 1 Teradata spinoff hit during 3Q, adversely affecting net income, NCR said. Income from continuing operations totaled $33 million, 18 cents per share, while earnings from continuing operations hit $39 million, 21 cents per share, from items related to NCR's manufacturing realignment, its Teradata spinoff and a realignment of the Customer Services division in Japan.

"(The) new NCR delivered better-than-expected operational results in the third quarter, featuring both strong revenue growth and operating margin expansion," said Bill Nuti, chairman and chief executive of NCR. "We accomplished these results while also successfully launching Teradata Corporation as an independent, publicly traded company.

Nuti said the completion of the Teradata spinoff will allow the company to focus on implementing this long-term vision and business strategy for growth in the self-service sector.

"While we are excited about new NCR's strategy and pleased with our business results, we have significant work ahead to realize our vision of leading how the world connects, interacts and transacts with business," he said.

Some highlights

Revenue in the financial self-service segment hit $407 million. Operating income totaled $56 million, an increase from $43 million last year, primarily because of higher volume.

The retail segment reported revenue of $278 million, up 27 percent. NCR attributes that growth to numerous "large" self-service rollouts during the quarter. Operating income of $20 million improved from $11 million in '06, as revenue growth and an improved mix of self-service solutions outpaced pricing pressure.

PADERBORN, Germany · Wincor Nixdorf has announced that it has established its own subsidiary in the Russian market.

"We want to strengthen our already well-established position in the promising Russian market," explained Eckard Heidloff, president and CEO of the company, to an audience of representatives from politics, industry and press at the subsidiary's opening in Moscow. He foresees retail banks and retail companies on the Russian market entering a phase of competition among themselves, thus providing Wincor Nixdorf with potential for growth.

Wincor Nixdorf said it finds itself in a good starting position, both in the banking and retail sectors. Strategic cooperation with local companies acting as sales and service partners has been ongoing since 1997. This business model has proven to be very successful and will be supported and extended by strengthening Wincor Nixdorf's resources in Russia.

In the last ten years, market share of ATMs has risen from four percent to 30 percent while the market share of electronic POS systems for retailers saw a remarkable increase from one percent to 42 percent. As measured by their balance sheet totals, 11 of the 20 largest retail banks are customers of Wincor Nixdorf's. DAYTON, Ohio · NCR Corp. says it now is offering Intel dual-core processor technology within its ATM and point-of-sale solutions.

According to a news release, newly ordered ATMs will feature the dual-core processors, with upgrade kits available for existing NCR Personas ATMs.

Using the Intel processor technology within the ATM casing can provide up to 40 percent faster processing capacity with enhanced power savings, NCR says. The company collaborated with Intel to implement the new technology across NCR's broader range of products, including its next-generation POS terminal, the NCR RealPOS 80XRT, which was introduced earlier this year.

The enhanced electrical efficiency supports cooler and quieter systems, while enabling the transfer of power only to those areas of the processor that need it, thereby ensuring that the terminals operate more efficiently. The built-in Intel Smart Cache also are touted for providing enhanced performance.

"The market has quickly recognized the value of the new dual-core technology in providing enhanced power savings while still maximizing performance, scalability and investment protection for the future," said Alan Chow, NCR's chief technology officer. "Leading financial institutions and retail businesses worldwide are seeking ways to decrease carbon footprints and conserve resources, while enhancing the efficiencies of technologies and processes within their reach. The energy savings now available by integrating dual-core technology within NCR ATMs and RealPOS solutions is just one of the ways NCR is helping our customers achieve a vision of sustainability."

MUMBAI, India · NCR Corp. has announced an alliance with Symstream Technology Group Ltd. to introduce wireless connectivity solutions for ATMs in India.

By deploying Symstream II, a wireless modem for mobile connectivity, banks in India can deploy ATMs in remote sites, offering banking services to unbanked rural populations, the companies say.

Unlike traditional dial-up, wireless ATM transactions are two to three times faster. As transactions on the ATM channel become more convenient in developing countries, the demand for ATM access at off-premises locations is expected to increase.

NCR also says the introduction of advanced functions, such as bill payment, automated deposits and cash-recycling, at ATMs are likely to have greater impact over the next couple of years in developing countries.

LAS VEGAS ·  This year's Self Service Expo, put on by KioskCom, wrapped on April 26. About 2,500 exhibitors and attendees made their way to this year's show, which was touted by exhibitors to be one of KioskCom's best.

Displays covered a range of technology, from self-checkout and financial self-service solutions to digital signage and gaming. The offerings were diverse.

From a financial perspective, companies like CreditCall Corp. say they're branching out and expanding their services into the kiosk arena. The payment-gateway provider, well known in the ATM space, is working with companies in the United States and Europe to enhance transaction processing. In the kiosk realm, the opportunities are vast, said Peter Alcock, CreditCall's marketing director.

"We've been working in this space for some time now," he said. "As kiosks offer more diverse transactions, like payment acceptance, we see real opportunity for growth."

England-based Felix Corp., provider of the Max Box · a hybrid ATM/kiosk that offers everything from cash dispensing to digital photo printing · and CreditCall have worked together in the United Kingdom for about a year. Now the two are initiating deployment in the United States.

Andy Egan, Felix's chief executive, said the U.S. market is ready for more diverse self-service offerings, like those offered on the Max Box. He expects Max Box to make its U.S. debut this summer.

"It's a revenue opportunity for the retailer, and there really is no risk," Egan said. "The retailer gets about 50 percent of the profit from the transactions, and the Max Box gives them a chance to offer services they wouldn't otherwise provide, like digital photo printing."

Through the "Everyone's a Winner" promotion, Max Box offers consumers rewards, for transactions. Users pay a fee for cash or digital photo printing, but with each transaction a reward from one of Max Box's partners is offered. The rewards range from retailer discounts to free hotel stays. Consumers can select the rewards they want.

The advantage for the retailer, Egan said, is that Felix offers the rewards through partnerships it establishes · freeing the Max Box deployer from finding sponsors for those incentives.

"We find the sponsors," he said. "The retailer doesn't have to do anything, so it truly is a win-win."

Egan expects to launch the full Max Box line in U.S. gas stations, convenience stores and pubs · locations that been successful in the U.K. The line includes the Max Box midi and mini, digital retail kiosks, and the Max Box maxi, an ATM hybrid that includes all digital-retail functions in addition to cash dispense.

KIOSK Information Systems will manufacture the enclosure for the U.S. deployment. CreditCall will process the transactions.

"Having international coverage is an advantage for us, especially when it comes to working with companies like Felix," Alcock said. "The Max Box can be deployed in the U.S. with the same processor, so expansion overseas is easier.

ST. PAUL, Minn. · Infonox and Elan Financial Services have partnered to develop a multifunction ATM that allows consumers to perform multiple financial transactions, including bill payment, deposits from remote locations, cashing payroll checks, transferring funds, and buying money orders and prepaid cards.

Through the Pass+ ATM/kiosk line, financial institutions, independent sales organizations and retailers can use Infonox's Active Payment Platform in conjunction with transaction processing from Elan. The PASS+ comes preloaded with Infonox's software.

"We see a huge market opportunity in offering solutions to our client base to help them deliver a variety of kiosk-based financial services," said Janet Estep, president of Elan Financial Services. "With declining ATM-transaction volumes, new delivery methods become necessary for tapping into new revenue and new service offerings from different transaction types and new customer segments."

According to a news release, the line is the first "plug-and-play," end-to-end system certified with back-end service providers that provide functionality and services. Elan provides marketing, back-office, cash management, EFT processing, settlement services, and vendor management. Infonox provides the software, device management and driving, switching, monitoring and support functions.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. · ATM Marketplace, a site dedicated to the financial self-service industry, has launched two guides that focus on the future of automation and vault cash services in the ATM space.

The first, "Financial self-service and the automation revolution," is a 48-page report that delves into the future of branch automation. Written by ATM Marketplace editor Tracy Kitten, in partnership with Paderborn, Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf International, "Financial self-service and the automation revolution" takes an in-depth look at the ways brick-and-mortar branches in the United States and abroad are using self-service technology to enhance consumer experience and improve profit margins

The second, "Controlling the Cash: A guide to effective ATM cash management," is a 41-page report that analyzes ways independent sales organizations can cut operating costs by outsourcing cash-management services to third-party providers. Also written by Kitten, in partnership with Wilmington, Del.-based Cash Connect, "Controlling the Cash: A guide to effective ATM cash management" addresses the cash needs of U.S. ATM deployers · large, mid-sized and small.

"Both guides review industry changes that are impacting and will continue to impact the ATM and self-service industries over the next several months," Kitten said. "Financial institutions and independent deployers are facing similar challenges in today's marketplace: Both are competing for market share while they work to effectively reduce operating costs. Finding the right balance is key."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. · ATM Marketplace, a site dedicated to the financial self-service industry, has launched a miniguide about the current state of retail ATM deployments in the United States.

Industry pressures and dropping per-ATM transaction volumes have put a kink in many independent sales organizations' styles, but the market is not doomed, industry insiders say.

In its newest publication, "Retail ATMs," ATM Marketplace takes a step back to review the off-premises ATM market in the United States · a market that continues to top the world, from an off-premises perspective.

The 29-page report was written by Valerie Killifer, an ATM Marketplace contributor, in partnership with Willoughby, Ohio-based WRG Services Inc., a full-service ATM provider.

As U.S. consumers' comfort with self-service technology continues to exceed expectations, new doors of opportunity are opening for independent ATM deployments. From advanced functions like check-cashing to the identification of new, viable locations for retail ATM placements, independent operators have more options now than when the market boon hit the United States in 1996.

"I think people are starting to take a different view of ATMs today than when we started in the industry 10 years ago," said Mike Stevenson, WRG's chief executive. "Then it was a business advantage to have an ATM. Today, people are starting to realize it's a disadvantage not to have one."

CHESHIRE, England · Felix, the U.K. company behind Max Box multifunction retail ATM kiosks, has announced two new agreements with OmniCash Ltd., an independent ATM deployer.

The first agreement involves OmniCash servicing and maintaining the NanoCash ATMs that Felix has installed in its Maxi Max Box kiosks, while the second will see OmniCash become the exclusive distributor of the NanoCash machine within the Max Box in the pub and convenience-retail sectors.

OmniCash and Felix will work together to find new sites within those two sectors (and others on a non-exclusive basis) to deploy the NanoCash ATM Max Box. While Felix still plans on the same rate of machine deployment, it anticipates an increase in the number of pub and convenience-store sector opportunities.

The partnerships further complement the contract Felix signed last month with Bank Machine Ltd., the largest independent ATM operator in the United Kingdom.

ATM Marketplace is a sister site of SelfService.org.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ATM Marketplace, a site dedicated to the financial self-service industry, has launched a guide that takes an in-depth look at multivendor ATM software in the United States and throughout the world.

The 53-page report, entitled "ATM software: Awakening the ATM channel," was written by ATM Marketplace editor Tracy Kitten in partnership with Edinburgh, Scotland-based KAL, an independent financial self-service and branch software provider.

Deployers, as they shift their ATM operating systems from OS/2 to Windows, are realizing new opportunities for their ATM channels. No longer locked to one original equipment manufacturer for software, today's open-OS environment is offering new opportunities.

"Although the industry has spent a long time talking about the shift to Windows, most of the United States ' ATMs still run on OS/2," Kitten said. "That, however, is quickly changing. And, as it does, financial institutions are learning that they have more options available to them where software is concerned."

Industry consolidation has played a significant role in that revelation, Kitten said. As FIs have merged and/or been acquired, ATM networks have become blended. In fact, finding an ATM network that compromises machines from a sole hardware vendor is a rarity in today's market place.

Today's ATM networks are diverse, but open standards are allowing deployers to operate their blended networks on single platforms using multivendor software.

UTRECHT, The Netherlands -- The cash-in-transit company SecurCash has made an effort to futurize their cash logistics with the help an RFID tracking progam. The system from Transtrack International and Capturetech makes it possible to follow secure cash transports more closely.

All cash transport details are registered: personnel involved, route, transport value, etc. This creates considerable transparency within the process. All information is recorded by RFID chips and sensors, relaying the tracking information online in real time.

RFID technology makes the presence of personnel in the transfer of packages partially obsolete. In addition, pay-in safes can independently indicate using specific parameters when a cash transport is required. RFID technology enables SecurCash to use routes dynamically, which benefits security.

DAYTON, Ohio · NCR Corp. has awarded a five-year contract to Solectron Corp., a leading provider of electronics manufacturing and integrated supply-chain services, to manufacture the company's ATMs and payment solutions in the Americas and its self-checkout systems globally. As part of its recently announced global manufacturing realignment, NCR will transfer its Americas manufacturing to Solectron's sites in Columbia, S.C.; Guadalajara, Mexico and Jaguariuna, Brazil by the end of 2007.

"Expanding our relationship with Solectron supports our ability to remain competitive, build a sustainable cost structure, and better serve our customers' needs by freeing up capital to invest in new product innovation," said Bruce Langos, NCR senior vice president of Global Operations. "We believe this strategy will play a key role in helping us improve our longer-term operating margin."

Solectron has been producing and assembling Teradata data warehouse servers as well as providing systems integration for NCR's Teradata Division for seven years.

"Solectron is a proven entity," said Langos. "The company has consistently demonstrated its ability to adhere to the same global quality standards for manufacture and testing that we demand of all of our manufacturing facilities worldwide."

"NCR has been a valued customer for many years, and we are extremely pleased to extend our relationship," said Doug Britt, executive vice president, Sales and Account Management, Solectron. "Our strength in manufacturing automated and self-service systems combined with our expertise in highly complex electro-mechanics, build-to-order, configure-to-order and system-level integration fits perfectly with NCR's product line."

Thursday, 11 January 2007
Dayton, Ohio · Officials at NCR Corp. announced Jan. 11 that they plan to cut 1,200 jobs as part of a realignment strategy that aims to improve the company's global ATM manufacturing efficiency.

NCR says it will continue to manufacture ATMs in China, India and Budapest. But in the Americas, the company is moving toward a contract model that will push its ATM manufacturing to outside vendors.

"This restructuring will strengthen NCR's global order fulfillment capabilities to better meet customer expectations and needs within this ever-changing market," said Bill Nuti, NCR's president and chief executive. "The realignment should enable meaningful cost reduction as we optimize our manufacturing operations by improving absorption across geographies and strategically outsourcing to contract manufacturers where the company can reap economies of scale."

NCR would not say with which companies it is negotiating · only that financial self-service equipment is not their primary business. But it did say the move is not expected to have any impact on any of its ATM product lines.

NCR's Dundee, Scotland, plant is taking the biggest hit, with 650 expected job cuts. And the ATM manufacturing facility in Waterloo, Canada, will likely drop 450 employees.

NCR's Carrollton, Texas, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, plants have been spared the brunt of the layoffs · 32 of Carrollton's 72 jobs are expected to be axed, while about 60 are expected to be cut in Sao Paulo.

"Managing three separate factories (in the Americas) is hard to manage," said Bob Tramontano, NCR's vice president of Self-Service. "We feel very sure of our capability to manage each of the (contract) sites to make sure the customer knows he is getting the highest quality from NCR."

Each of the three Americas facilities will retain research-and-development, project-management and marketing departments. Only the operations side will be scaled back, Tramontano said.

Those same departments will continue operating out of Dundee, but the operations side · logistics, supply-line management, manufacturing, etc. · will be moved to NCR's facilities in India, Budapest and China.

"We can have better efficiency, and that efficiency can be passed on to our customers in better lead time," Tramontano said. "So by combining our capacity it allows us to have greater volume, so we should be able to have better flexibility to respond to our customers."

Dundee will continue to manufacture a handful of NCR's more complex financial self-service products, he added, but most operations are being realigned.

"We're freeing up some capital so we can innovate more often. This is about re-investments in the new NCR self-service business and continuous improvement," Tramontano said. "I believe it's a win-win for everyone. It is regrettable, however, that the way we had to get to this is through employee reduction."

Tramontano could not speak to the amount NCR expects to save annually as a result of the realignment. He also would not release details about what the future holds for NCR's manufacturing facilities in Dundee, Carrollton, Waterloo and Sao Paulo.

"We will probably lease out the buildings that we own or reduce the footprint if we rent," he said.

NCR is expected to release more details about the financial impact the new ATM-manufacturing plan will have company revenue Jan. 25 during its fourth-quarter earnings call.

LOUISVILLE , Ky. - ATM Marketplace has launched a new special report that explores the convenience and advantages self-service bill-payment kiosks are providing consumers and retailers.

The report, "Beyond the ATM," takes an in-depth look at the revenue-generating opportunities bill-pay kiosks provide, especially when used as a complementary ATM service.

For independent sales organizations working to supplement their ATM income, additional self-service transactions provide lucrative opportunities, says Hamed Shahbazi, chairman and chief executive of TIO Networks Corp., which sponsored the report.

Off-premises ATM placements, such as those in retail locations like convenience and grocery stores, account for nearly half of all ATM placements in the United States. Those locations are prime for services that target unbanked and underbanked consumers, a segment that is estimated to exceed 44 million in the United States .

Huntington Beach Independent:The recent looting of bank accounts held by hundreds of customers in Huntington Beach and other Orange County communities has prompted police to issue a warning. In October, thieves siphoned money from bank accounts of more than 600 people, among them 70 in Huntington Beach. The only common link in those thefts was that the victims had bought groceries using a debit card at Ralphs supermarket on Goldenwest Street, police said. According to Verifone, manufacturer of the check-stand terminals used at Ralphs, what occurred was impossible, Huntington Beach Det. Jeff Nelson said.

Los Angeles Times: In Augusta, Ga., pastor Marty Baker has brought a touch of the future to his 1,100-member congregation, Stevens Creek Community Church. The church recently installed three touchscreen "giving kiosks," which allow parishioners to tithe with the swipe of a card.

"I paid for gas today with a card, and got lunch with one," said churchgoer Josh Marshall. "This is really no different."

Baker came up with the kiosk idea a couple of years ago. He had just kicked off a $3-million building drive, but noticed that few people kept cash in their wallet for the collection bag.

So he began studying the electronic payment business. He designed his machine with the help of a computer programmer who attends Stevens Creek, and found ATM companies willing to assemble it for him. In early 2005, he introduced the first machine at his church.

Since then, kiosk giving has gradually gained acceptance among his upper-middle-class flock. The three kiosks are expected to take in between $200,000 and $240,000 this year · about 15 percent of the church's total donations.

LITITZ, Penn. — Susquehanna Bancshares, Inc. has selected Wincor Nixdorf as its total banking solutions IT partner. Susquehanna is Wincor Nixdorf's first customer in the United States to install all Wincor hardware, software and services to its branches and entire ATM fleet.

Wincor Nixdorf has deployed or replaced all 170 ATMs, including full-function interior, through-the-wall, and drive-up ATMs; installed its Windows-based ProCash DDC multi-vendor software solution with web extensions; and implemented its ProView monitoring and management solution for Susquehanna's entire ATM fleet. Wincor Nixdorf also will provide first and second-line maintenance services, manage monthly operating system updates, and will monitor Susquehanna's software inventory on the ATMs via its version control system.

"The new hardware, software and services from Wincor Nixdorf have given Susquehanna the opportunity to focus even more on our customers while still being able to reduce costs," said Steven Stoner, vice president and director of systems support and EFT services for Susquehanna Bancshares. "With Wincor Nixdorf, we are now able to provide reliable, innovative ATM solutions at a lower total cost of ownership."

Wincor Nixdorf's ProCash DDC multi-vendor software solutions with Web extensions allow the software to run on other brands of ATMs. The multi-vendor platform provides Susquehanna with greatly improved user interface capabilities and the ability to integrate new transactions at the ATM in the future. ProView is Wincor Nixdorf's ATM monitoring and management tool that allows Susquehanna to automatically monitor its entire network around the clock, providing the bank with a single point of software distribution for updates, instead of depending on costly on-site visits by technicians. Susquehanna will utilize ProView for remote content/application updates, allowing the bank to deploy new advertising campaigns quickly and cost effectively.

Also under the agreement, Wincor Nixdorf field service engineers will provide all services and will carry only certified Wincor Nixdorf parts. They will have access to additional local parts depots in the Susquehanna vicinities as backup supplies. Wincor Nixdorf has utilized its global eServices Platform to allow Susquehanna to electronically create service tickets as well as monitor the progress through complete ticket closure. Susquehanna also will be able to customize its own online service performance reports via Wincor Nixdorf's iSupport Web-based solution.

"Susquehanna is one of the first companies of its size to prepare its entire ATM fleet for the new regulations that are required of all financial institutions, in order to automate multi-vendor ATM operation and management and to begin the migration towards more functionality at the ATM," said Julia Waugh, director of marketing for Wincor Nixdorf USA. "Wincor Nixdorf is pleased to be Susquehanna's total banking solutions provider. Susquehanna is setting the standard for financial institutions of its size."

NORTH YORKSHIRE, England · Men and women in the United Kingdon have very different attitudes when it comes to accessing and carrying cash. According to a You Gov survey commissioned by the Link Interchange Network Ltd., of 2,300 people, men are twice as likely to withdraw more than £100 (U.S. $127) from an ATM at least once a week.

Men also carry more cash, with 52 percent of them carrying more than £20 (U.S. $25), compared to only 37 percent of women.

Security is the primary reason women gave for not carrying a lot of cash. Of the 5 percent who do carry between £50 (U.S. $63) and £100 (U.S. $127), they do so to avoid regular trips to the ATM, says the You Gov survey.

But when it comes to over-spending or running out of cash, 20 percent of both men and women say they could visit a cash machine more than three times in one evening; 33 percent say they borrow money from friends.

In addition, 12 percent of the men surveyed said they were sometimes too drunk to remember using the ATM, only becoming aware of the transaction when they read their statements the next day. Only 4 percent of women made the same admission.

NCR Internet kiosk investment, Bill NutiWASHINGTON · Saying he is "passionate about the space," NCR president and chief executive Bill Nuti kicked off the company's first U.S. self-service conference by pledging "tremendous investments over the next several years" to make the company the leader in self-service for many years to come.

Nuti addressed a crowd of about 75 attendees from companies deploying or considering deploying self-service devices, including kiosks, self-checkout units and ATMs. About as many NCR staffers mingled with them in Washington yesterday and today in an event that was equal parts seminar, product exhibition and cheerleading for the growth of self-service not only as a set of technologies, but as a way of life.

"We have to educate leaders of business on how important this is," Nuti said.

The growth of self-service transactions shows the importance of the applications, he said. Last year, Google boasted more than 27 billion searches on its Web site, but the number of ATM transactions · just one type of self-service use · was about 50 billion.

NCR has held self-service conferences in Europe the past three years, with the most recent being in Barcelona, Spain, in May. About 300 people attended that show, up from about 75 for the first one. Officials hope the growth of the U.S. show mimics the European increase.

Nuti stressed several aspects of self-service that will drive its growth and serve as rungs for its further climb in the industry:

Intelligent deposit. Nuti said that ATMs able to accept cash and checks without the medium of an envelope experienced between 50- and 100-percent increase deposit volume. NCR displayed at the show ATMs that printed images of deposited checks on the receipt.

Bill payment. Already, wireless companies receive $1 billion a year · 10 percent of their revenue · in the form of self-service facilitated payments.

Backend/front-end integration. Self-service applications are significantly more powerful when backend data management is able to interface with the front-end. At the conference was a Personas 71 outfitted with NCR's new Aptra Relate software. The programming greets users by name and stores preferences such as language, common withdrawals and receipt preference. NCR's teller-assist units provide bank personnel information about customers using counter-mounted kiosks, enabling tellers to offer products like specifically tailored loans and investments. Such data-driven applications require sophisticated and massive data management. Nuti said NCR's acquisition of data warehouse company Teradata means NCR is the only company able to service both front-end and backend needs.

Several NCR applications were exhibited that were either new or sported new functionality.

Medical. When medical facilities install self-service check-in kiosks, Nuti said, wait- times decrease 50 percent for new patients and 75 percent for returning patients. Another benefit enabled by strong backend data management is the ability of information to be shared with researchers in real-time, helping establishments such as the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Florida track the effectiveness of experimental treatments.

Branch automation. Nuti said U.S. banks are spending $1.4 billion this year on branch renewal at the same time bankers estimate 67 percent of a teller's time is spent on low-value transactions, and about 40 percent of their time overall is spent waiting for customers to complete their end of the transactions. Teller-assist devices will enable one teller to service three to four customers at a time, the way self-checkout uses one clerk to oversee four lanes.

Retail. The next step in self-service checkout Nuti calls "self-tender," where cashiers scan and bag items and the customer handles payment on his own. Where in the case of smaller purchases it is efficient to have the customer handle all components of the transaction, self-tender expedites larger purchases by having trained personnel move the merchandise.

BEIJING  —   NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) today announced it has been awarded its first order from China's CITIC Bank, making NCR one of CITIC's leading suppliers of automated teller machines (ATMs).  Established in 1987, China's CITIC Bank (CNCB) is one of the earliest commercial banks formed in the course of China's reform.

Under the terms of the contract, NCR will provide CITIC with maintenance services and NCR's latest self-service technology, including NCR Personas ATMs and its newest, multi-function Personas M Series ATMs with NCR's industry-leading, multi-vendor APTRATM Edge software.  This offers CITIC a solid foundation for the addition of new services and for the future deployment of a single software application environment across its entire ATM channel.

CITIC currently owns more than 1,000 ATM units nationwide. With this purchase, the bank is looking to increase its operational efficiency, competitive edge and customer service levels.  CITIC will also migrate high-volume, low-commercial-value customer transactions from its teller counters to the self-service channel and plans to add new service offerings on its ATMs in the future.  The total solution offered by NCR, which includes hardware, software and supporting services, will help CITIC reduce the total operational cost of its ATM network, while enhancing its customer service and market competitiveness.

Jeff Lutz, vice president of Global Sales and Marketing for NCR's Financial Solutions Division, said, "We are pleased to help CITIC meet its retail banking development initiative, particularly in its goal to provide customers with 24-hour cash deposit and withdrawal services.  Looking ahead, we will continue to work closely with CITIC on its various self-service initiatives, including the potential for our unique High-Availability Services offer with its Self-Service Diagnostic Gateway (SSDG) analytics, which can further enhance the availability and the bank's ATM channel."

At CeBIT, Wincor Nixdorf shows how ATM transactions can be additionally secured with the integration of biometric identification procedures.

Wincor Nixdorf has been involved with the practical application of biometric procedures for more than ten years now, and has carried out numerous pilot projects with customers internationally. At CeBIT, the company is presenting one of many possible applications. In the process on display, the tried-and-tested PIN is not replaced by biometric procedures; instead, it is made even more secure with the addition of fingerprint matching.

After inserting the card and entering a PIN, the customer is requested to place his/her finger on the sensor. The fingerprint is then scanned and compared to a template installed in the database. This so-called "one-to-one" comparison enables a highly secure authentication of each bank customer.

With the implementation of this technology, fraudulent reading of card data and tapping of PINs is rendered useless, since only the person whose fingerprint matches the biometric data stored in the database is allowed to complete the transaction.

For securing teller station workplaces or PC networks, Wincor Nixdorf already offers a biometric authorization solution using fingerprint technology. Audit-proof tracking of attempts to misuse the system is possible with the implementation of ProTectWork/Enterprise, since logging on under another user name is no longer possible. ProTectWork/Enterprise is server-based and can be used internationally

A quick stroll by SSKA member Tranax Technologies' booth at ATMIA East and it soon became clear that Tranax has a new vision for the future · one that includes self-service beyond the ATM.

Shown above is Tranax' MB c4000, the first terminal manufactured by Tranax.

The Fremont, Calif.-based company showed off its newest addition, the MB c4000, at the February conference. The self-service terminal is unique for a couple of reasons: It represents a convergence of ATM and self-service functionality, and it's a machine that Tranax is manufacturing independent of Seoul, Korea-based Nautilus Hyosung Inc.

Tranax entered the off-premise ATM space in 1997 with the Mini-Bank 2000, an ATM manufactured by Nautilus Hyosung and sold by Tranax. In North America, the relationship afforded Tranax the ability to provide its customers with ATM support and services.

Now that Tranax is branching out into more advanced functions, its executives say it needs more control at home.

"When you've got more going on at the ATM · more than simply cash dispense · the hardware becomes more complex," said Tranax vice president of sales Bill Dunn. "The self-service equipment is more complex, and we needed to have the ability to react and do enhancements with quick turnaround time."

No surprises

Simply, Dunn said, "Tranax made a decision to manufacture things above and beyond what Hyosung could do for us."

Some manufacturing will continue in Korea, "at least for the time being," Dunn wrote in an e-mail to ATMmarketplace. "We are in the process of moving into a new facility that will almost double our space and will allow for more of the manufacturing to be done here."

That decision didn't surprise most in the industry.

Neil Clark, vice president of sales for Billings, Mont.-based ATM Express Inc., Tranax' No. 1 ATM distributor, has worked with Tranax since 1999. Clark said the relationship with Nautilus Hyosung hindered Tranax, and a severance of sorts was expected.

"This move puts them in control, and I think it will be good for them," he said. "They can react faster now to market changes."

Joe Harris, general manager of Hamburg, N.Y.-based ANS Marketing LLC, another Tranax distributor, said Tranax' ability to quickly react to customers' and partners' needs will have a huge impact, especially where new functionality is concerned.

As an example, Harris pointed to Tranax' check-cashing solution · a solution developed by Portland, Ore.-based Vero Inc. At ATMIA, Vero and Tranax announced a partnership to provide check-cashing functionality on the c4000. (Read also, Vero, Tranax join forces to provide self-service check-cashing solution.)

"The newness of the check-cashing solution, for instance, is an interesting point to consider," Harris said. "The fact that they'll be creating that and manufacturing it here will allow them to do any adjustments or tweaking needed, in order to get it to work the way they want it to. "With check-cashing, you're going to be fine-tuning it in order to get it to work in the field."

start quoteThis has been an evolutionary thing. Tranax made a decision to manufacture things above and beyond what Hyosung could do for us.end quote

-- Bill Dunn,
Tranax

For a piece of equipment that typically costs between $20,000 and $30,000, distributors and customers want to know that support and parts are close to home, he said.

"When you make an investment in equipment like that, you expect it to work a certain way. And if you have to wait for something from South Korea, that's not going to sit well with anyone who's invested that type of money."

Bringing software and hardware together

Jeffrey Lee, Tranax' director of sales for self-service products, said "Enhancement is why we're doing our own manufacturing."

Like Harris, Lee said Tranax' check-cashing and advanced self-service functionality require more attention from a software perspective · an area in which Tranax expects to excel.

"The two have to be together · software and hardware," Dunn said. "As a hardware supplier, you have to understand software. " Dr. Hansup Kwon has a doctorate in computer and electrical engineering and he understands how to make a piece of hardware work with a piece of software."

Through its partnerships with Vero, Livewire International Inc., Financial Payment Systems and Info Touch Technologies Corp., Tranax is honing in on self-service beyond cash dispense, Dunn said. (Read also, Tranax, Livewire introduce ATM with ticketing solution, Ticket sales at the ATM make a comeback , Tranax expands into kiosk business and Retailers are reaching the unbanked, FIs are lagging behind.)

And what of the relationship with Nautilus Hyosung?

No one at Nautilus Hyosung could be reached for comment, but Dunn said Tranax' relationship with the company is not expected to change.

"The Mini-Bank 1500 is manufactured by Hyosung, and that's still our business. It's a partnership we both dearly enjoy having," he said. "There are rumors in the industry that we're mad at them or that we're replacing them and that's just not true. The major portion of our business right now comes from that relationship with Hyosung, and we don't see that side of the business going down. We see it continuing to grow with the self-service terminal business."

A move forward

Tranax decided more than a year ago to branch out into an area where Nautilus Hyosung doesn't exist.

What's Important

Since Tranax' market entrance in 1997, it has worked closely with Nautilus Hyosung.

The MB c4000 is the first product Tranax manufactured in-house.

Tranax expects to continue working with Nautilus Hyosong on the retail ATM side. On the self-service/kiosk side, however, Tranax is working independently with other partners.

"This has been an evolutionary thing," Dunn said. "Tranax made a decision to manufacture things above and beyond what Hyosung could do for us."

Tranax' products are now divided into two categories, Dunn said: One for ATM enhancements, which includes its retail ATM business with Nautilus Hyosung, and one for self-service terminals or kiosks that don't interface with the ATM.

He added that Tranax is securing its place in a self-service/kiosk market that is expected to grow 9 percent over the next two years, more than double the projected growth for the ATM market.

"In the very near future (the next 24 months), we probably will be saying 50 percent of our business is self-service terminals," Dunn said. "I think that will be the driving force in our business, surpassing the retail ATM side of the business.

"There's a lot of buzz in the marketplace, and if the buzz translates into production, it will be a very short time."

BURNABY, BC · Cardtronics Inc. and Info Touch Technologies Corp. are expected to introduce a hybrid ATM this spring that combines traditional cash dispense with cash acceptance. According to a news release, in addition to making a spring pilot program in select U.S. markets, a total managed solution that includes hardware, software and administration services also will be offered.

This initiative allows merchants to offer a broad range of financial services, without requiring any additional staffing or dedicated floor space beyond what is typically needed for an ATM. A few of the available services include bill payment, wireless phone top-ups, long distance, mobile content and other PIN-based products, gift card purchases, stored-value card dispensing and stored-value card reloading.

"By offering this new hybrid ATM, merchants will be able to better serve and cater to their customer base," said Jack Antonini, Cardtronics' president and chief executive. "The new service offerings will drive enhanced customer loyalty and create a proven recurring revenue stream."

Cardtronics will own and operate the new hybrid ATMs; Info Touch will provide processing services for all services beyond cash dispensing.

All hybrid ATMs will be part of Info Touch's Tio Network and will be branded with Info Touch's "TIO" logo as well as the logos of Cardtronics and the merchant-retailer.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio · SSKA member Diebold Inc. signed a deal to purchase Genpass Service Solutions LLC, according to a news release issued Feb. 28.

An independent, third-party ATM maintenance and service provider, GSS was a wholly owned subsidiary of Genpass Inc., an ATM, EFT and debit-processing service provider that was purchased by U.S. Bank in May 2005. (Read also, Genpass' sale was no big surprise.)

As a result of the planned acquisition, Diebold will provide service for approximately 6,000 ATMs in 34 states, in addition to ATMs Diebold is already contracted to service throughout the country.

"Throughout Diebold's history, a strong service commitment to customers has guided our business," said Chuck Ducey, Diebold's vice president of global development and services. "Acquiring Genpass Service Solutions illustrates our dedication to providing our financial customers with the best service in the industry. This new addition to our service organization will enable Diebold to add nearly 100 highly skilled service professionals to our service team. This continued growth of industry knowledge will benefit each and every Diebold service customer."

An associated agreement between Diebold and U.S. Bancorp ($209 billion in assets), the sixth-largest financial services holding company in the United States, extends Diebold's service contract with its U.S. Bank subsidiary. The agreement renews Diebold's maintenance contract with the bank for a period of five years and contracts Diebold to provide service to more than 7,100 ATMs for U.S. Bank across the U.S.

Janet Estep, U.S. Bank's executive vice president of transaction services, said Diebold's acquisition of GSS makes strategic sense.

"We have had long-standing relationships with companies, including Diebold, to conduct the hardware servicing aspect of our ATM business, so it makes sense that we would continue to use our outside partners to provide that service following our acquisition of Genpass," Estep said. "Diebold is an ATM servicing leader in the financial industry, and its acquisition of the ATM maintenance side of Genpass is a good fit."
