Home Media Magazine reports that MOD Systems will deploy its Retail Digital Content Distribution System, a digital movie-download kiosk, at six Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stores in Dallas, Seattle and Portland, Ore., by Nov. 13. During the trial deployment, the kiosks will offer more than 1,000 new release and catalog titles from Paramount, Warner Bros. and other studios, the report says.

Using the MOD kiosks, customers can download movie content to SD cards and then view the content on devices with SD card slots. The company tells Home Media that rentals will be tested at different prices, and customers will have access to the content for 30 days after purchase. Once a movie is viewed, it will be available for 48 hours before the included digital-rights management technology locks it, preventing further viewing.

Working Solutions Ltd. has released the latest version of its CyberBrowser Internet browser for kiosks, the company announced in a news release.

Working Solutions says the product is developed exclusively for use in kiosk applications:

Because it concentrates on kiosk requirements and not desktop user functions, CyberBrowser's streamlined setup makes for a rapid configuration, providing a user-friendly interface that is designed exclusively for interactive, touchscreen kiosks. Capable of displaying exactly the same Web content as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, CyberBrowser enables the kiosk owner to decide which features and Web site their users will be allowed to access.

According to the release, CyberBrowser's features include an attraction mode, start page, surfing permissions and download management, among others. The product also integrates Sentinel, the security software behind the Acquire Kiosk Developer Solution. Working Solutions says Sentinel is a separate, secure software that locks down the kiosk and prevents unwanted access from either local or remote agencies.

Working Solutions says CyberBrower can be purchased at the new Web site, CyberBrowser.net.

Carnival Cruise Lines has announced via its news blog an on-board, interactive self-service solution that will debut Sept. 21 on its 130,000-ton Carnival Dream ship, the company's largest. KioskMarketplace.com has learned the project's software is provided by Netkey Inc.

The solution will allow guests access to Carnival's FunHub, an intranet portal that will feature what Carnival says is the cruise industry's first on-board social network, as well as information regarding the ship's services, facilities and daily activities. The network will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it also can be accessed via guest personal laptops or netbooks available for rent from the ship.

According to the blog post, FunHub's social network is much like those many travelers may already utilize day-to-day, and the portal's information features have been created to help guests craft their own cruise experience:

Carnival Dream's on-board social network mirrors the experience one finds on other social networking sites. Guests can create a personal profile and use the application to meet and interact with others on-board, send and receive private messages, create groups based on interests and invite friends to attend shows or participate in on-board events. Guests can also create their own private or public discussion group, inviting others in their traveling party or friends they meet on-board to participate.

Designed as a convenient resource for wide-ranging information specific to the Carnival Dream, the intranet portal details the ship's numerous on-board activities, including entertainment options, daily events and youth programs. Carnival Dream's extensive food and beverage offerings are showcased with sample menus, hours of operation and more. A filtering application is available to assist guests in planning their day.

The ship will provide access to FunHub via 36 "state-of-the-art" self-service stations located on decks three, four and five.

U.S. News & World Report: New digital download kiosks - units that enable consumers to download music, movies and television shows onto digital memory cards - are expected to launched next week. CNN: A pair of German researchers have designed a prototype kiosk that gives iPhone users their first taste of the semantic Web. The semantic Web is just one component of what many tech analysts are calling "Web 3.0" -- the next generation of online interaction. Generally, it refers to an emerging Internet experience in which all things on the Web will be described with descriptor languages so computers can "understand" what they are. An object marked as baseball bat could be identified by the computer and the Web could immediately display related data, such as information on catchers' mits, baseballs, uniforms, etc. After the user places his iPhone on the kiosk surface, a circle appears around it displaying -- among other things -artists and albums similar to the MP3 tunes loaded on the iPhone.

Computerworld: Kiosks running Linux are more secure than those running Windows, says Mac Jones of Whangarei-based Netstop after Computerworld’s report on attack-code targeting Windows kiosks. The Windows operating system was designed for people at home and in offices, who, naturally, wouldn’t try to hack their own computers. But now, most 15-year-olds can pull up information on the Internet and hack a Windows computer, he said. To Jones, it proved too hard to make kiosks safe using Windows and he switched to the Linux OS. Last week, Computerworld reported that an attack tool, targeting Internet kiosks and terminals running Windows, had been released by a New Zealand security researcher, Paul Craig, who works for consultancy Security-Assessment.com. Craig released his findings at the world’s largest hacking conference, DEF CON, in Las Vegas in August.

The (Malaysia) Star Online: Information in Internet kiosks can be hacked in just 10 seconds, warns Paul Craig, principal security consultant of Security-assessment.com, a New Zealand-based company. Such kiosks are common in airports, train stations, libraries, hotels, corporate lobbies, and on street corners, but they’re not as hack-proof as one might assume. "Internet kiosks are designed to not trust users but they trust commands from a remote Web site, which a hacker can simply surf to and access the tools he needs (to access user data)," Craig said a recent security conference.

eWeek.com: With Borders just seven months away from having to fly on its own without Amazon.com, the nation's second-largest bookseller has quietly launched its beta site. Eventually, kiosks will be involved: A customer wanting to plan a trip to Hawaii could go to the travel section and then to the Hawaii section. A nearby kiosk would use partner services to book flights, arrange hotel rooms and print out relevant brochures. Someone visiting the romance section might use a kiosk to access a dating service or possibly even connect with someone in that section, during a wine-and-cheese gathering for customers. But in the preliminary beta site triggered live on Sept. 6, only the most faint hints of the new strategy are evident.

Denver —The Denver Newspaper Agency has launched electronic coupon advertising for local retailers and their affiliated product manufacturers.

YourHubClub.com, aligns with the DNA's weekly publication, YourHub.com, a website where users post their own photos and stories. YourHub.com is produced every Thursday by the Rocky Mountain News and delivered by the Denver Newspaper Agency to subscribers of the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post.

The market launch of YourHubClub, introduced on August 31, offers consumers a free club membership for viewing, selecting, and redeeming electronic coupons within their neighborhoods. The offering of electronic coupons compliments the newspaper coupons and advertising in print, as well as the promotions on YourHub.com websites.

In addition, retailers can go online and see how many consumers have viewed, selected, and redeemed their coupons. This form of feedback is valuable in determining the effectiveness of a retailer coupon and in targeting consumers with the items they are most likely to buy.

For consumers, this new offering gives the flexibility to use newspaper coupons, use electronic coupons, or apply both options to save money. YourHubClub Electronic Coupon solution takes the Internet world into the marketplace and reduces the need for consumers to print web-based coupons for redemption. Coupons can be viewed at convenience store kiosks, while fueling your car, and at other kiosks throughout the neighborhood, or at home (www.yourhubclub.com). Participating retailers then redeem the coupons simply by swiping the consumer's membership card or entering their phone number.

NCR Internet kiosk investment, Bill NutiWASHINGTON · Saying he is "passionate about the space," NCR president and chief executive Bill Nuti kicked off the company's first U.S. self-service conference by pledging "tremendous investments over the next several years" to make the company the leader in self-service for many years to come.

Nuti addressed a crowd of about 75 attendees from companies deploying or considering deploying self-service devices, including kiosks, self-checkout units and ATMs. About as many NCR staffers mingled with them in Washington yesterday and today in an event that was equal parts seminar, product exhibition and cheerleading for the growth of self-service not only as a set of technologies, but as a way of life.

"We have to educate leaders of business on how important this is," Nuti said.

The growth of self-service transactions shows the importance of the applications, he said. Last year, Google boasted more than 27 billion searches on its Web site, but the number of ATM transactions · just one type of self-service use · was about 50 billion.

NCR has held self-service conferences in Europe the past three years, with the most recent being in Barcelona, Spain, in May. About 300 people attended that show, up from about 75 for the first one. Officials hope the growth of the U.S. show mimics the European increase.

Nuti stressed several aspects of self-service that will drive its growth and serve as rungs for its further climb in the industry:

Intelligent deposit. Nuti said that ATMs able to accept cash and checks without the medium of an envelope experienced between 50- and 100-percent increase deposit volume. NCR displayed at the show ATMs that printed images of deposited checks on the receipt.

Bill payment. Already, wireless companies receive $1 billion a year · 10 percent of their revenue · in the form of self-service facilitated payments.

Backend/front-end integration. Self-service applications are significantly more powerful when backend data management is able to interface with the front-end. At the conference was a Personas 71 outfitted with NCR's new Aptra Relate software. The programming greets users by name and stores preferences such as language, common withdrawals and receipt preference. NCR's teller-assist units provide bank personnel information about customers using counter-mounted kiosks, enabling tellers to offer products like specifically tailored loans and investments. Such data-driven applications require sophisticated and massive data management. Nuti said NCR's acquisition of data warehouse company Teradata means NCR is the only company able to service both front-end and backend needs.

Several NCR applications were exhibited that were either new or sported new functionality.

Medical. When medical facilities install self-service check-in kiosks, Nuti said, wait- times decrease 50 percent for new patients and 75 percent for returning patients. Another benefit enabled by strong backend data management is the ability of information to be shared with researchers in real-time, helping establishments such as the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Florida track the effectiveness of experimental treatments.

Branch automation. Nuti said U.S. banks are spending $1.4 billion this year on branch renewal at the same time bankers estimate 67 percent of a teller's time is spent on low-value transactions, and about 40 percent of their time overall is spent waiting for customers to complete their end of the transactions. Teller-assist devices will enable one teller to service three to four customers at a time, the way self-checkout uses one clerk to oversee four lanes.

Retail. The next step in self-service checkout Nuti calls "self-tender," where cashiers scan and bag items and the customer handles payment on his own. Where in the case of smaller purchases it is efficient to have the customer handle all components of the transaction, self-tender expedites larger purchases by having trained personnel move the merchandise.

CALGARY, Alberta - SMART Technologies Inc. announces its participation in cutting-edge research being conducted at the FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis in Tennessee for the interactive kiosk and digital signage markets. The Memphis Intelligent Kiosk Initiative (MIKI) is a research project designed to investigate the preferred and most efficient forms of human interaction with information kiosks. The Actalyst interactive overlay, from SMART, fastens securely over a large flat-panel display to create a durable, touch-enabled kiosk. Using the recordings from this kiosk, researchers are studying how visitors to the FedEx Institute access information. The three-year project is the first of its kind for the institute and will help to define objective benchmarks for the emerging interactive kiosk market.

The intelligent kiosk allows visitors to find the location of more than 80 rooms within the institute as well as information on events at the institute, the history of the university, the MIKI project and the institute's various research groups. Researchers are attempting to determine if people prefer interacting with an animated on-screen character or just a computer-generated voice. They are also examining what methods of providing directions are most effective. The kiosk uses a camera to identify when people approach the kiosk and a speech-recognition system then begins to interact with them. These features allow people to find information by touching the digital display with a finger or speaking to the kiosk. Once a topic of interest has been identified, the kiosk can reply in a variety of ways, including verbally or with 3-D animations, video presentations, images or additional sound signals and music. The entire interaction is recorded so researchers can collect this valuable data and determine how it may be applied for the emerging interactive kiosk and digital signage markets.

"With the addition of the Actalyst interactive overlay and the unstructured speech interaction, MIKI has become more than a fancy display. It has become a personality with which visitors enjoy interacting and treat as they would a human receptionist," said Lee McCauley, assistant professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Memphis. "In numerous places where a static display or no assistance has been available before, an intelligent kiosk application, like MIKI, can be installed to enhance both marketing initiatives and efficiency. For retail locations in particular, an intelligent kiosk would be like a Google for 'bricks-and-mortar,' providing the information people want and creating targeted marketing for the retailer."

NEW DELHI — Intel Corporation today officially launched an innovative PC platform that has been developed exclusively to meet the needs of rural villages and communities in India. Designed as a result of defining locally relevant computing solutions based on Intel technology, the Intel-powered "Community PC" platform is equipped to operate in a community setting while accommodating the varying environmental conditions prevalent in the country.

With an objective to bridge the urban-rural divide, today Intel also announced its "Jagruti" ("Awakening") initiative designed to provide rural communities in India with greater economic and social opportunities. By collaborating with leaders in business, government, education, online services and Internet service providers, Intel's Jagruti program will support the spread of rural Internet "kiosks" based on the new Intel-powered Community PC. These kiosks will help accelerate access to the benefits of information and communications technologies (ICT) in villages across India.

The aptly named Community PC platform was defined by Intel after intensive ethnographic studies in rural India showed that a clear desire for technology access exists in remote rural communities. Unfortunately, weather conditions (heat, dust, humidity) and unreliable power sources can compromise typical PCs used in such environments.

To address these issues, the Intel-powered Community PC platform was developed to be a fully functional, expandable and shared-access computing solution. It is a highly reliable, manageable system that supports remote diagnostics and control features under low power requirements. Unique features include:
  • Ruggedized chassis: The chassis has been designed to withstand dusty conditions, varying temperatures and high humidity. It has a removable dust filter and integrated air fan to regulate the temperature of the motherboard. The chassis is designed to keep the motherboard cool at temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius and the PC resistant to humidity levels of 70 to 85 RH (Relative Humidity).
  • CPSU: The PC is equipped with a Customized Power Supply Unit which is comprised of an Integrated Power Supply and the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) unit, which allow the PC to maintain continuous load power in the event of a power outage.
  • Low power consumption: The total power consumption of all peripherals is less than 100 watts.
  • Access Control:The platform comes installed with a certificate-based access, allowing banks to verify the validity of installment payments against the purchase of the PCs.
Intel expects many of these Community PC platforms to be deployed in Internet "kiosks" common in Indian villages. The kiosks are operated by local entrepreneurs and provide neighboring communities with access to services such as e-Government forms (land records and marriage licenses, among others). This saves time and money for potential users who no longer need to spend an entire day and take multiple modes of transportation into the main city to complete necessary paperwork. They can now visit a local kiosk and have a kiosk "operator" input their data online quickly and cost-effectively.

The Community PC model thus provides both a means of improving efficiencies for the locals as well as creating entrepreneurship opportunities for prospective kiosk owner/operators. Intel, after studying this business model in detail and identifying the needs and limitations of existing PCs being used in rural communities in India, initiated several pilot projects utilizing the Community PC platform in villages across the country.

The Intel-powered Community PC platform is part of Intel's commitment to enable individuals, communities and countries to gain equal access to the technology tools, skills and educational content they need to fully engage in the global economy.

"Intel actively supports efforts to provide computer technology to places where it hasn't previously been available," said William M. Siu, vice president and general manager of Intel's Channel Platforms Group. "Our experience shows that ICT adoption in developing nations requires much more than providing a standard PC; the technology often needs to be adapted to the local usage and environment of a particular country or region. In addition to defining the platform and developing the ingredient technologies, Intel also collaborated with local hardware, software and service companies to deliver on the promise of the Community PC platform. Overall, Intel has made substantial investments in technology, ecosystem partnerships, and education initiatives in support of this belief."

OTTAWA · Wireless Logix Group, parent company of SSKA member KioskLogix, and Protus IP Solutions announced in a news release the integration of MyFax into the BizCenter Logix business center solution located in hotel lobbies, airport club lounges and multidwelling units throughout the United States.

MyFax, an Internet-based fax service offered by Protus, allows busy business travelers to send and receive faxes using existing e-mail accounts or the Web. It also enables users to better manage their fax communication · reduces paper usage and allows faxes to be scheduled at a preset date, all at a lower cost than traditional fax servers or fax machines, regardless of physical location.

Faxing is a critical component to many business transactions where sales orders, purchase agreements, contracts and other documents are time-sensitive. With Internet-based faxing capability, faxes can easily be forwarded, saved and stored digitally, allowing for smarter document management. Internet fax virtually eliminates lost pages, allows for immediate electronic document storage and ensures delivery of the document to the right hands.

A key benefit MyFax offers Internet fax users in a public facility is document confidentiality. Using Internet fax service, business users eliminate the risk posed by traditional fax machines of exposing private and confidential faxes as they sit idly on the paper tray.
