Dynamic Card Solutions (DCS), a provider of instant card-issuance hardware and software, debuted its prototype instant-issuance kiosk system at last week's BAI Retail Delivery conference. DCS' Ron Zanotti demonstrated the solution, which he said capitalizes on the personalization trend in the card market and allows financial institutions to create a one-to-one marketing solution and enhance relationships with their customers.

To use the solution, users simply verify their identities by entering an account number and a secondary form of identification, such as an account PIN. They then are able to choose from a variety of gallery images, which DCS can customize to include photos of local scenes or sports teams, for instance. A user can also create a card featuring a personal photograph uploaded to her account on the FI's Web site.

Zanotti says DCS showcased the prototype at BAI as a way to gauge the industry's interest in such a solution. Based on interest expressed by attendees from banks and credit unions, Zanotti says the company likely will move forward with development of the kiosk, with a potential launch in the second or third quarter of 2010.

The "automated card machine," as DCS has coined it, was manufactured by KIOSK Information Systems, and its user interface was developed in-house by DCS.

ProTouch, a supplier of electronic point of sale kiosks, has announced a partnership at KioskCom Europe with YesPay, a provider of card payment-processing services. The partnership resulted in several kiosk solutions designed to offer retailers the ability to offer self-service card payments.

According to Retail Banking Reaearch, the number of self-service checkouts is set to quadruple over the next five years.

Protouch said that the solutions will be geared toward supermarkets, rail stations and cinemas that want to offer self-service chip-and-PIN credit and debit card payments.

Tom Quarry, managing director of ProTouch, says the solution will help retailers meet consumers' self-service expectations:
With self-service payments becoming the norm, we wanted to give retailers an easy-to-deploy solution that ticks all the boxes and that you could practically buy off the shelf.

YesPay’s EMBOSS payment service is fully preaccredited with multiple card acquirers within the U.K. and Republic of Ireland and is PCI DSS Level 1-approved. The system delivers transaction authorization in three to five seconds, and at the end of the day retailers can access and download real-time transaction reports.

The technology will help speed ticketing in more than 370 trains serving more than 200 million commuters and travelers per year.

BRISTOL, England -- Since it's obtained card processing certification with the Canadian Moneris Bank Processor, CreditCall Corp., an association member, has seen a dramatic rise in the number of Canadian parking terminals that are being equipped with the company's CardEase credit card payment system.

According to a news release, parking machine manufacturers Parkeon and MacKay Meters both offer the CreditCall service to their Canadian customers and have deployed almost 600 of the self-service machines. The largest installed base is in the city of Toronto, although there are also installations in London, Barrie and Brampton (Ontario) and Quebec.

Canadian motorists in these cities no longer have to worry about having enough change to park for the time they need. The CardEase system securely authorizes every transaction online with the bank, protecting the operator against card fraud.

MacKay Meters' customer, Fanshawne College in London, Ontario, has recently added credit card payment to its self-service parking system.

"I'm very happy with this system," said assistant facilities manager Marion Dietze. "It has certainly increased our revenue with credit cards being used. Customers often purchase more parking than needed but they feel comfortable with this choice."

PADERBORN, Germany -- An ability to provide a more comprehensive package of services and solutions for retail and banking is something Wincor Nixdorf AG executives are touting at this year's Wincor World.

Wincor Nixdorf president and chief executive Eckard Heidloff has stressed the corporate vision of a continued transition from providing solely hardware to providing more inclusive solutions and services that offer financial institutions and retailers more.

On the retail side, that means service and IT infrastructure, and a chance, the company says, to make inroads in developing markets such as India and China. But Wincor Nixdorf also expects its holistic approach to help build its business in developed markets like the United States, where retail growth has been a challenge. Last year, Wincor Nixdorf's retail business dropped 2 percent, and it fell another 3 percent during the first quarter of fiscal year 2008/2009.

But Heidloff expressed confidence about retail growth over the next three quarters, saying "We have strong innovative solutions for retail with cash management, but we have to communicate our offerings much better in the U.S."

In addition to cash management and automated checkout solutions, which Wincor Nixdorf has showcased at Wincor World for the last few years, this year the company introduced a new transaction processing offer for retailers and FIs.

On an outsourced basis, Wincor Nixdorf can now manage debit- and credit-card transaction processing for FI and retail customers. The payment processing services for retail companies include IT-infrastructure management, the transfer of all card transactions to the bank acquirer that settles the card transactions, as well as the provision and support of the POS terminals at the retail location.

One advantage to the outsourced approach, Wincor Nixdorf says: Retailers are no longer tied to a specific bank.

"The option of changing its financial services provider improves a retailer's position when it comes to negotiating lower charges," the company says. "Wincor Nixdorf's transaction processing services for banks range from transaction checking and forwarding to authorization, back-up and transfer of the posting data records, and provision of the data center and network infrastructure. All types of national and international cards are processed. The service covers all transactions offered at self-service terminals: from balance inquiries to cash dispensing."

Wincor Nixdorf says it also assumes responsibility for the maintenance, remote monitoring, cash replenishment and the transaction platform for all of the ATMs in the retail environment.

"Quick and smooth transaction processes are ensured by automatic synchronization with systems at other locations and automatic transfer of the relevant functions," Wincor Nixdorf says. "As a result, transactions can be monitored and analyzed online, at the branch or store and at the head office."

DUBAI, United Arab Emirites — MxN Middle East FZ-LLC, a Dubai-based digital signage and digital media company, has been appointed as distributor by KIOSK Information Systems. MxN is pleased to add the Self Service Kiosk products of KIOSK to the impressive list of products it distributes for the Digital Signage and Digital Media industry. KIOSK manufactures information kiosk solutions with functions such as touchscreens, ticket printers, card readers, card dispensing solutions, bill payment, money accepting, money dispensing, order entry, photo kiosk solutions, music download, public Internet access terminals, gaming kiosks as well as biometric solutions such as fingerprint readers.

"In today's digital world, solutions like the ones MxN provides will increasingly become the norm. MxN provides a full turnkey solution including the hardware, software, content and technical support," said Raad Raad, managing director of MxN.

Dan Stewart, director of international sales for KIOSK said, “I strongly support the fact that we are learning and growing together in a business where sharing our knowledge with the right partner is critical. Our partnership with MxN enables us not only to support our customers with a complete solution, but most importantly, brings their attention to cost effective and world leading products with partners they can trust.”

Preliminary research indicates that the out of home media industry is growing at a very fast rate. There are many underutilized opportunities for the integration of digital signage and information kiosks. More and more customers are requesting overhead LCD screens to be integrated into their service kiosks to promote their products or to generate extra revenue. MxN has developed  innovative solutions for integrating digital signage into kiosk solutions. The main benefits of this are to leverage the kiosk placement and use an overhead screen for media sales or information distribution.

MxN is one of the only companies in the region to be able to provide a full turnkey solution for its customers. MxN is an example of a company committed to maintaining its dominant leadership position in the area of digital media.

"In choosing MxN, one of the determining factors was their ability to deliver on all aspects of a project from hardware, software and technology to content," continued Stewart.

"We are very excited about adding KIOSK as a product that MxN distributes. We are constantly looking for solutions and products that take our integration and installation abilities above those of our competitors. KIOSK is a very real example of a product that helps us achieve that goal," said MxN's Raad.

Baseline: The major data breach affecting Hannaford Brothers grocery chain isn’t record-setting in terms of the volume of records exposed — the 4.2 million records breached is dwarfed by the 94 million records exposed during the TJX breach. But the Hannaford breach is groundbreaking in its own way, because this massive security incident is the first publicly-reported exposure to hit a retailer that claims to have been certified as compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI).

The Associated Press: Pay-at-the-table systems are popular in Europe and other parts of the world, but they haven't yet caught on in the United States, largely because equipment makers haven't been able to point to a reason why restaurateurs should invest in the gear. Manufacturers now see an opportunity. A rise in the number of "skimming" scams, in which waiters use hand-held computers to quietly record customers' credit card information and sell it, is creating a sense of urgency. The concern is pushing managers to speed the flow of diners during peak hours.

PADERBORN, Germany · Wincor Nixdorf International and Cisco Systems Inc. have announced joint solution called SecurePOS, which is designed to enhance the security of transaction data generated in cashless payment scenarios.

According to a news release, the two companies have bundled their solution expertise to protect security for data-traffic passing from POS terminals to central systems in retailing enterprises. TP.net, the store software from Wincor Nixdorf, encrypts transaction data at the store level. Cisco's portfolio offers protection of data in retailer networks, using a special client to help defend against the compromise of data from POS systems to store-server and central systems.

One crucial factor in generating trust in the security of cashless-payment systems is protecting credit card-data, Wincor says. Reports of credit-card theft and hacker abuse have shaken the confidence of cardholders and retailing companies. The Payment Card Industry's data security standard includes a set of requirements that establish standards for credit-card transactions. Retailing enterprises that transact business with credit cards must comply with those regulations.

Wincor and Cisco say their solution package will help retailers address some of PCI's requirements.

PHOENIX - Hypercom Corp. announced that it has released a new EMV/PCI-approved unattended bankcard reader module for use in the self-service kiosk market. The new Optimum H2210 is a manual hybrid card reader accepting both magnetic stripe and smart cards and offering key size, integration and flexibility advantages over competitive units. It complements Hypercom's growing portfolio of unattended payment products, including the Optimum H2200 motorized chip & PIN card reader released last year.

"There is increasing demand for unattended bankcard readers in general, and manual readers in particular, both because of the lower cost and the smaller footprint," said Neil P. Hudd, senior vice president, Global Product Development and Marketing for Hypercom. "With the H2200 and now the H2210, we can provide both manual and motorized solutions for a market that is growing at a rate of nearly 11 percent per year and even more in the retail self-checkout sector. We also offer engineering advantages in both product categories that we believe will generate significant new business opportunities."

The new H2210 is designed to be incorporated into indoor or outdoor kiosks used in a variety of self-service environments. It has the smallest form factor of any product of its kind, offering important benefits for integrators who must fit multiple peripherals into limited kiosk space. It features an internal EMV Level 2 kernel that supports all current-generation EMV payment cards and eliminates the need for external components, and easy integration with Hypercom's K1200 or K1100 keypad via standard hardware connections and a common software platform to eliminate technical problems encountered when third-party keypads must be used.

The module supports all types of smart card applications with an EMV-compliant interface and offers a variety of hardware and software security features, including protection against unauthorized physical access and removal from the kiosk itself. A front card gate prevents coins, dust, moisture and other harmful debris from entering the reader, and it opens only when an ISO-size card is presented to the metal front bezel to thwart vandals.

Las Vegas, NV -  MagTek Inc, a global leader in electronic payment technology, will unveil their latest security product, a MagnePrint Enabled Encrypting Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) today at ETA's 2006 Annual Conference and Expo in Las Vegas, NV. The Encrypting Magnetic Stripe Reader provides complete protection of sensitive card data ensuring information is encrypted within the reader before it is transmitted to the card processing endpoint.

By incorporating MagnePrint, MagTek's proven Card Authentication Technology, into the Encrypting Magnetic Stripe Reader, the merchant can accept payment cards with the confidence the Encrypting MSR will secure the transaction, while MagnePrint will secure the card from fraudulent activity, such as 'skimming'. The Encrypting MSR will capture and encrypt data from all ISO- and AAMVA-encoded magnetic stripes, and is fully compatible with MagTek's existing USB MSR product line.

"In compliance with the Payment Card Industry mandates, the Encrypting Magnetic Stripe Reader enabled with MagnePrint offers a guaranteed resolution to susceptible card data" said John Arato, Vice President and Business Unit Manager, Retail Products at MagTek, Inc., "bringing a new level of security and protection to the payment industry and providing a solid and reliable front end product for our customers."
The reader fully supports TDEA (Triple DES) data encryption using the DUKPT key management method. This data encryption process prevents card holder information from being accessed at the POS terminal or from any Internet location; the data remains secure from end point to end point.

The Encrypting MSR is compatible with any device having a host USB interface. Standard configurations, such as traditional USB HID mode or USB Keyboard Emulation, are available and it does not need any special software drivers since it depends only on the native drivers of the operating system.

For an in-depth demonstration of the Encrypting Magnetic Stripe Reader or the MagnePrint Card Authentication Technology, please visit MagTek at booth #421 during the ETA Show.
