NEXTEP SYSTEMS, a provider of touchscreen ordering kiosks and digital menu board solutions, today announced the launch of its Casino Express self-order system at Boomer's Café in the Boomtown Casino Hotel in Bossier City, La.

Dan Condon, director of information technology for Boomtown Casino, says the facility chose to work with NEXTEP because of its experience in the casino space:
As we sought to adopt technology that would increase our efficiency, the expertise of NEXTEP SYSTEMS and the extent of its work with casino environments convinced us they were the right supplier for us. We believe NEXTEP will have a tremendous positive impact on both our revenue and customer satisfaction. With the system now in place, we expect our average order size to increase, customer wait times to decrease and that we will be able to provide better overall service to our guests during peak periods.
Using the Casino Express solution, restaurant customers can order meals directly from the touchscreen and pay for their selections using credit cards, debit cards or casino comp credit.

NEXTEP SYSTEMS has announced the deployment of its Casino Express touchscreen buffet-entry kiosks at Casino Queen, in East St. Louis, Ill., and The Rivers, in Pittsburg.

According to a news release from NEXTEP, casino guests use the kiosks to enter the number of diners in their party and prepay for their buffet meals with cash, credit, debit or casino loyalty credit. The kiosks then issue a receipt the guests use to gain entry to the buffet. The kiosk also offers the casino an optional reservation module to incorporate.

Jeff Breazeale, NEXTEP's sales director, says casino dining establishments are particularly well-suited to deploy kiosk solutions:
Casino foodservice represents an ideal candidate for self-service. Casino dining concepts have high traffic, long hours of operation and relatively high labor costs, resulting in a three- to six-month payback period.
NEXTEP says Casino Queen deployed three of the Casino Express kiosks at its Market Street Buffet, while The Rivers installed four of the devices at its Grand View Buffet.

BLAYDON ON TYNE, England — Display technology designer Zytronic has applied its in-house glass processing capabilities and ZYBRID PCT-based touch sensors to enable ACE Interactive, a subsidiary of Aristocrat Leisure Ltd, to create the Indago video lottery kiosk for increased interactivity and excitement in lottery and casino games.

In addition to the Zytronic technology, Aristocrat’s Gen7 platform is a key component in the Indago solution. The Gen7’s advanced game engine features an Intel Embedded processor, which provides the power to drive richer game content with outstanding new features, while providing a perfect host for ongoing developments in server-based gaming.

Indago uses a dual 22-inch widescreen display to enhance the appearance and increase the playing features of modern game terminals. The upper screen captures attention and shows the state of play with stunning visual effects, while the lower touch-enabled screen allows each player to select and play a variety of games. The front panel is designed and manufactured as a complete unit for easy integration with the TruServ system.

By working closely with the Indago design team from the outset, Zytronic has created a stylish pure glass front panel with touch-sensor functionality embedded only in the lower display area, using its proprietary projected capacitive technology (PCT)-based touch sensing. Utilizing ZYBRID’s customization options, ACE Interactive was able to design a unique, bezel-free user interface, with discreet touch-sensitive and non-touch zones. The unparalleled level of durability offered by PCT, in comparison with other available touch-sensing technologies, allowed ACE Interactive to confidently offer customers a low-maintenance, reliable, touch-controlled unit for use in a wide variety of public areas.

“Zytronic has fulfilled our entire requirement for the Indago front panel, as a one-stop solution comprising many highly advanced concepts,” said Michael Koch, CEO of ACE Interactive. “Its overall quality also helped us to meet important acceptance criteria, such as EU emissions, immunity and safety standards.”

ZYBRID is drift-free product, which means that recalibration should not be required during the display lifetime. Its pure glass-fronted design provides a high resistance to damage and chemicals and, coupled with a zero-bezel design, easily can be wiped clean.

Unlike other touch technologies, a PCT touch sensor has no front-face-active elements, instead using an array of microfine capacitors — each one a fraction of the diameter of a human hair — laminated behind a protective front surface. This provides an extremely high light transmission and a strong, sealable and damage-resistant glass touch surface.

The Indago front panel uses Zytronic’s patented 64-channel touchscreen controller, which is designed for large format and widescreen displays. By providing inputs for 64 individual sensing elements, the new controller maximizes touch resolution throughout the entire area of Indago’s lower 22-inch screen.

“At ACE Interactive, we are committed to utilizing the most advanced technologies to enhance experiences for the gaming community,” Koch said. “Zytronic, with its outstanding knowledge and capabilities, is a perfect fit with our approach, and has played a major role in helping to develop Indago as a highly innovative product delivering unprecedented value for our customers.”

ACE Interactive has supplied Norsk Tipping AS — the Norwegian national lottery company — with TruServ, the company’s server-based gaming solution, which includes an exciting portfolio of ACE Interactive and Aristocrat games and the Indago kiosk. Norsk Tipping plans to roll out 6,500 Indagos between August 2008 and 2010.

The New York Times: As the culture morphs, so morphs the techniques the military must use to win new recruits. That's the logic behind a new U.S. Army recruitment center at the Franklin Mills mall in Philadelphia. In addition to the fast-paced arcade, there are also information kiosks loaded with descriptions of 179 jobs in the Army, including details on salaries and benefits.

LAS VEGAS—It was triple vision for SoloHealth at KioskCom’s Self Service Excellence awards ceremony as its innovative EyeSite kiosk won two of three categories where it had been entered and snagged the day’s grand prize, the Best of the Best, for receiving the most votes of entries in all categories.

David Drain (left), executive director of the Self-Service & Kiosk Association, congratulates IBM's Cortlandt Johnson, who was inducted into the association's hall of fame.

Users of the EyeSite kiosk enter sight-related information on a touchscreen, such as the person’s age, the date of his last eye exam and whether he wears contacts or glasses. The kiosk then presents a series of stimuli for both near and distance vision. A printout of the results and a video analysis help the user determine the next steps for eye care.

In addition to overall best, the application was voted best healthcare application and best new innovation in a kiosk deployment. Manufacturer KIOSK Information Systems and software vendor Netkey submitted the kiosk for the Self Service Excellence awards, which were presented on the first day of KioskCom Self Service Expo.

For the first time, the Self-Service and Kiosk Association announced its Hall of Fame inductees as part of the awards ceremony. They were Cortlandt Johnson and Janet Webster. Johnson’s background includes helping Eastman Kodak develop the first photo kiosk and being a leader of self-service technology at IBM. He also helped found the association. Webster, who manages self-service for the United States Postal Service, is responsible for the deployment of 2,500 Automated Postal Center kiosks. For 2005, she was the recipient of the 2005 Kiosk Industry Leader of the Year Award in the Deployer category.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. · ZOOX Stations Inc. and RMES Communications Inc. have teamed to bring the first Internet and PC game Cafe to Denver International Airport, according to a news release.

Using a booth enclosure, travelers can now go beyond just checking their e-mail and surfing the Internet · the stations also feature PC game titles that are available for local or online play.

The cafes are an upgrade to the present "Shibby" Internet equipment, which have been a mainstay to DIA travelers since 2002.

The interface guides users to one of two tiers of use · high-speed Internet or PC gaming. Quick links to popular sites like MySpace, YouTube, and Google are one source of entertainment. The gaming aspect adds a whole new entertainment option, the company says.

The Internet and Game cafe is the creation of ZOOX Stations, a Louisville, Colo.-based division of KIOSK Information Systems.

"The single ingredient needed to make this machine a gamer magnet is idle time," said Rick Malone, president of KIOSK and ZOOX Stations. "Our development team has included the highest caliber gaming technology and a full complement of industry-leading title options that appeal to even the most sophisticated gamer. With RMES' attention to quality operation, we are extremely confident it will be a hit with DIA patrons."

Main terminals at the airport are expected to integrate the equipment and services by July.

Las Vegas Business Press: Americans have taken to interactive kiosks in a big way. ATMs have been supplanting bank tellers and withdrawal slips for a long time. But in recent years, it's become possible to do everything from making your pre-flight check-in to renting DVDs without talking to an actual person. This phenomenon has shown up on the casino floor, where the trend toward machines and away from humans is rapidly gathering speed. A new kiosk might point the way to a future casino that is almost entirely automated.

SKOKIE, Ill. — The In-Store Marketing Institute has released the complete list of award winners for its 2006 Design of the Times Awards Competition, held in conjunction with the In-Store Marketing Expo in Chicago. Winners were announced Sept. 27.

Presented by P-O-P Times, the Design of the Times Awards Competition recognizes the in-store marketing industry's best displays and retail promotions. More than 100 brand-marketing and retailing executives judged the entries based on creativity in design and engineering, the innovative use of materials, the compatibility of the display to its retail channel, its ability to enhance the brand's image, and the realization of sales and marketing objectives.

The Microsoft Xbox 360 Kiosk Program earned the Best of the Times award, the highest award in the annual competition. The kiosk was produced by Design Phase Inc. of Waukegan, Ill.

"I was surprised by the win," said Michael Eckert, president of Design Phase. "I think you always are. I knew we had a great product with an incredible story behind it, so our chances were good, but there were several very nice programs entered this year that could have also won."

Eckert went on to boast that his winning program, had the highest product attachment rate in the history of video games the first month of sales in the United States and Europe. Beyond the typical video-game interactive kiosk, Design Phase offers downloadable consumer content for personalizing the game experience with personalized audio jacks for an enhanced retail-demonstration experience.

The program also was designed to be flexible with in-store maintenance in mind. Custom L.E.D. lights were used for longer burn-life, and exotic plastic composites were incorporated into panels to insure the 4-to-5 year life of the kiosk.

Developed by Innovative Funds Transfer, a joint venture formed by Global Cash Access and International Game Technology, seven EDITH cashless gaming kiosks have been installed at Casino Pauma, a Native American gaming establishment in Pauma Valley, Calif. Infonox, a California-based technology company, created the EDITH application and administers system performance.

EDITH, which stands for Electronic Debit Interactive Terminal Housing, received Phase I certification in June from Gaming Laboratories International, an independent lab that tests and certifies gaming equipment and systems against specific technical standards for jurisdictions. EDITH will now be field inspected at Casino Pauma for its final certification.

"We have a strong relationship with GCA, which has always been at the forefront of providing innovative cash access products, so we're very excited to be the first to offer this cashless gaming technology to our customers," said Javier Saenz, chief executive of Casino Pauma. "EDITH will provide added convenience to our slot patrons, and we'll benefit from reduced cash handling."

In recent years, ticket-in, ticket-out systems have gained popularity among gaming establishment patrons, who appear to prefer the convenience of slot vouchers over coin or waiting for cash payouts at the game. This increase in slot voucher volume has resulted in a significant decrease in cash handling costs for gaming establishments. IFT believes that EDITH will decrease cash handling costs even further for gaming establishments.

"We think EDITH will help transform the way cash is accessed on the gaming floor, and we're thrilled that Casino Pauma and its forward-thinking management have agreed to be the pioneers for EDITH's beta test," said Tom Sears, executive vice president of card services and cashless gaming for GCA.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. · ZOOX Stations, a wholly owned subsidiary of KIOSK Information Systems, is Sept. 28 formally launching its first turnkey pay-for-use game café, "ZAZOOX," at A.M.O.A. in Las Vegas.

ZAZOOX is a self-service game station loaded with many of the most popular titles marketed by PlayStation, X-Box and other top-tier developers. Prime releases include Battlefield 2, Counter Strike 2, Need for Speed, EA titles and others. Internet access with quick links to popular sites like MySpace, Google and Yahoo provides an additional tier of pay-for-use revenue.

"The bar has been raised in home gaming, and it's time for a paid game station that fully leverages the popularity of these releases," said Rick Malone, president of ZOOX Stations. "ZAZOOX maximizes game-play revenue with a library of over 20 high-end games that can be played individually, in local competition mode or online. Multiplayer online gaming is a market that is expected to reach $2 billion by 2007, and we've built an incredibly attractive access point."

ZOOX Stations has more than 300 custom-branded self-service cafe stations already purchased and being rolled out to Army bases throughout the United States and Germany.

"Initial field stations have been in place since January and have been exceptionally well-received," Malone said. "The Army Recreation Program has indicated aggressive expansion plans this year, which obviously speaks well to the station's adoption, performance, and ROI."

The kiosks also feature MEI bill acceptors.

"Players clearly prefer cash for these gaming kiosks. And as the ZAZOOX Game Cafe is a premium product, we needed a first-rate payment acceptor," said Tom Weaver, KIOSK's sales and marketing vice president. "The MEI unit offers the reliability and ease of operation that our customers expect."

Indianapolis, Ind.— Champ Car is registering thousands of members a week to its official fan club with touch screen kiosks at race events throughout the 2006 season. Starting with the season opening Long Beach Grand Prix in April, more than 2000 race fans at each event have joined the Champ Car Inner Circle Fan Club using interactive fan club activation kiosks by SeePoint Technology of Redondo Beach, Calif.

The Inner Circle kiosks, which travel with the three-day Festival of Speed that is part of every Champ Car race, allow the league to interact one-on-one with fans during the race weekend and get them into the Fan Club. The fan club activation kiosks provide a unique, low cost form of customer acquisition that capitalizes on the excitement of attending a race.

SeePoint designed the Champ Car Fan Club activation application and kiosks for efficiency and ease of use.  To join the Inner Circle at the track, fans need to provide only the most basic contact information, allowing Champ Car to maximize the number of fans that can be added to their database at any event.   Once a fan is added to the database, Champ Car can use email to communicate more extensively with members.  The freestanding kiosks, manufactured by SeePoint, offer the combination of small footprint, durability and plug and play operation that is necessary for systems that will be packed, shipped and set up again as they travel with Champ Car across the country from race to race.

"The SeePoint kiosks that are in operation at our event streamlines the ability for our fans to get information about our Inner Circle Fan Club," said Vice-President of Marketing and Sales Will Wilson. "It also gives us more ways to reach our fans as well, allowing us to provide greater information flow to those that demand it."

In addition to registering fan club members, the kiosks can also be repurposed to facilitate data collection through surveys and to promote the marketing efforts of Champ Car sponsors.  The SeePoint kiosks feature easy to replace overhead and center signage so the systems can be boldly yet almost effortlessly re-branded as the use of the kiosks changes.  For Champ Car and its sponsors alike, the fan club activation kiosks provide not only a new grass-roots way of marketing to fans but also valuable information about who their fans are.

WHITE PLAINS, NY - IBM announced today it is joining forces with Hoplon Infotainment, Online Game Services Incorporated (OGSI) and Render Rocket under separate agreements to help them innovate in the gaming and animation industries. Recognizing the critical role that new technology and services will play in the future of these industries, IBM is working with small and medium gaming companies around the world to empower innovative business models.

IBM offers a variety of hardware, software and service solutions specifically designed to help game companies manage their games environment, reduce expenses, increase efficiency and generate more revenue. While mostly known for working with some of the world's largest game companies, IBM is also engaging with small and medium companies around the world to harness the power of IBM technology while these companies grow their business. Recently IBM has teamed with RenderRocket to create an innovative on demand animation service, a first of its kind game hosting service with OGSI and an on demand hosting environment for Hoplon, which supports a unique game design running on an IBM mainframe.

"IBM's flexible business model helps enable small and medium-sized gaming companies to grow their business at low cost and low risk," said David Laux, IBM Global Executive, Games & Interactive Entertainment. "IBM helps provide innovative business models for innovative companies."

Innovative game design on a mainframe
Hoplon Infotainment, a pioneering Brazilian developer of online games and game architectures, was originally considering cluster and possibly grid computing technology for its forthcoming game deployment platform. When attending a grid computing presentation, Hoplon was introduced to the IBM On Demand Business model and the service-oriented architecture (SOA) concept. That meeting changed Hoplon's course completely, and its new game, TaikoDom, is now being hosted on demand by IBM mainframe technology.

"We wanted to create a game deployment platform that was much more scalable and flexible than existing models," said Tarquinio Teles, Hoplon CEO. "It is clear to us that IBM's approach allows us to do that in a way we had not considered before . . . a way that is new to the industry."

Traditional online games exist in one or more "shards," or identical duplicates of the complete game environment. A large game can have a very complex, costly, underutilized infrastructure, with multiple shards running on multiple servers and a great deal of redundancy.

By contrast, Hoplon's game platform places all users in a single shard, but with a modular structure. Dedicated software modules handle specific functions for all players. This modular structure fits in well with the idea of a service-oriented architecture. In an SOA, computing functions are packaged as services that communicate with one another using open standards and clearly defined interfaces. If more modules or more capacity are needed, they can be added quickly and easily; the game "universe" can grow organically with IBM tools and technology.

Hoplon sees great benefit in working with IBM. "It's not just the quality of hardware, software and services, all of which are excellent," says Teles. "We liked the fact that IBM is both local and global at the same time. IBM has local knowledge and knows how business works here in Brazil. But much more important, IBM has a global reach, and is capable of delivering the same quality of service and expertise that we enjoy here at home to our customers in other parts of the world."

Game hostin powered by IBM
When it comes to hosting and services tailored to the needs of the online game industry, OGSI has carved out a niche by offering its customers the highest quality infrastructure and bandwidth at prices game companies can afford.

The OGSI business model is a first of its kind in the industry. From its inception, Silicon Valley-based OGSI has met considerable success with its game service provider business model, and chose IBM BladeCenter server solutions on which to base its platform.

"For OGSI, it's all about enabling customers with a means to provide their players with the best possible gaming experiences," said James Hursthouse, CEO, OGSI. "The reliability, scalability and price performance of the IBM Blade Server Solution allows OGSI to offer an attractive price point to our customers. They can scale their business as fast as it grows, without taking financial risk."

The OGSI model is based around an affordable monthly recurring fee for all of the hardware, bandwidth and support that a games company needs, regardless of its size. To this end, IBM BladeCenter server systems have been instrumental in helping OGSI customers reduce the risks and capital outlay associated with online game deployment.

Since the initial relationship with IBM began, OGSI has continued to add more IBM BladeCenter systems, as they experience rapid business expansion.

Animation on demand
Designed by animators for animators, Los Angeles, California-based RenderRocket provides 3D rendering services on demand to companies worldwide, from broadcast/TV producers and leading visual effects companies to animation, video games, product design and photography studios.

Using RenderRocket, animators can reserve time on, and send their work to a remotely located IBM Deep Computing Capacity on Demand render farm equipped with massive supercomputing power.

The solution offers a tremendous benefit to those businesses finding it difficult to justify large-scale investments in servers and related expenses, as well as having to manage additional unplanned workloads, obtain more capacity or meet tight deadlines during "crunch time."

"IBM offers us the best capacity and the best growth path, enabling our company to grow as fast as we need to. We can now offer our services to mid-sized animation firms who are, in turn, looking to scale quickly. And we can do this after only a few days and a phone call to IBM," says Ruben Perez, Executive Producer, RenderRocket. "IBM's ability to offer computing power on demand is critical to our business."

With IBM, RenderRocket did not have to invest in a costly capital infrastructure or systems management teams. In turn, its customers can avoid similar expenses and concerns by leveraging the distinctive interface it had already developed. Says Perez, "One of the things allowing us to offer a successful service is that we are able to put together a solution focusing on our strengths in animation and rendering, while IBM handles the core component of the technology. This enables a company like ours to do so without having to invest millions of dollars, which therefore reduces our business risk."

Las Vegas, Nevada — Tuesday, January 17, 2006 — When Super Bowl XL kicks off February 5 in Detroit, a new sports wagering system being tested at the Palms sports book would allow gamblers to bet in real time throughout game. Las Vegas-based casino equipment provider Progressive Gaming International Corp. will field test Rapid Bet Liveâ„¢ during the game using touch screen terminals designed and manufactured by Redondo Beach, California based SeePoint Technology.

Rapid Bet Live gives a casino another way to offer bettors action on a game. Once a game starts, Nevada sports books cease taking wagers. Rapid Bet Live opens the door for players to wager during the game, for example by betting on whether a particular offensive drive will result in a score, punt or turnover. Rapid Bet Live allows a sports book to offer from 30 to 50 different real time wagers on an individual sport event and can be easily configured to allow intra-game wagering on other sporting events.

Rapid Bet Live requires a bettor to deposit money into any account and choose a user name and password. Winnings are accrued to a player's total account with payouts posted automatically. Wagers are accepted in the sports book on SeePoint's CounterPoint touch screen terminal. The CounterPoint's contemporary design, small footprint and slim profile as well as the absence of exposed wires, cables or ports make this touch screen kiosk an ideal solution for installation in the Palms sports book. The CounterPoint kiosks also feature a 17 inch touch LCD. The large clear and responsive touch display provides the real estate necessary to display the various wagering options and maximizes ease of use and customer satisfaction.

"Internet gaming has made people comfortable with wagering on a computer terminal," said Jeff Harms, Rapid Bet Live product manager for Progressive Gaming. Sports handicapper Jimmy Vaccaro agrees. "Do I think the time is right for something like this? Absolutely," said Vaccaro. "The technology has advanced so that a system like this is feasible and the players are much more in tune to technology. I think the betting public is ready for it and I think the industry is ready for it. I think there are a lot of ways to use this system."
